She says it was the Black people who gave it the name not the White people. Yams were not part of the White people's diet. Okay I heard back from my cousin in Ghana...he is Fante.

I have seen the word in other languages that have nothing to do with Black people or Africans but I never shared it as I figured it was irrelevant. Lots to think about.

If you grew up in the United States, you’ve either heard the term Nigger, called someone a Nigger, or you’ve probably been called a Nigger. I was always taught not to say the word, that it was derogatory & racist etc. We were all taught that the word Nigger derives from the Spanish word “Negro” which means “Black Object” therefore labeling someone as not really a human being. We’ve been taught that it means “Ignorant Person” etc. Despite all of those things the word has become a household term, it’s one of the main root words in Hip-Hop music (NaS even named an album after it) & the word itself has grown into a kind of social phenomenon. Personally, I’ve used the word as a term of endearment to friends close to me, friends of all races, White included. I think words (and basically everything else) are fueled by the energy you put behind them. The truth is Nigger actually doesn’t derive from anything negative, derogatory or hurtful in anyway. It’s actually the opposite. Phonetically, words all have small roots within them & the meanings of those words evolve into other words & terms but essentially have the same value & energy. The term Nigger is an evolution from something positive, that was turned negative & due to the Alchemical nature of our people it’s been turned back into something positive. General Information: The tropical yam (Dioscorea alata) should not be confused with sweet potato, which is sometimes called "yam" in the United States. Its consumption by various ethnic groups (African, Caribbean, Latin American and Asian) has helped extend its trade to the major industrialized countries.
This is one type of Yam grown in Jamaica. It is white in colour and is slightly soft at times when cooked.
Yams are exported to the US on a year-round basis. Both production and demand fall during warmer weather, resulting in a decline in imports in the spring until an increase at summer's end. Registered highs for Februaryand March suggest an increase in yam consumption during the colder winter months. This increase during the winter period is associated to the consumption of stews and other food applications that contain yams.
Quality yams should be brown, clean, and fresh and should have reached their full maturity in the field before harvest. Skin should be entirelyintact, with no surface shriveling, fungal infection, insect damage, or sprouting.

Okay here is what one of my cousins in Ghana says. This is the African cousin not the Jamaican cousin who retired in Ghana.

It is called white yam here. It pounded into a dough called fufu. We use it in West Africa to make a pounded yam dow called "fufu" in Ghana, "fufui" in Togo and "futu" in Côte d'Ivoire. It's eaten with a variety of light soup (goat, smoke fish, chicken, palm oil, peanut etc.

He also said.

I am sure the white men called it negro yam because it was eaten by people with African origin. Actually all those tubers did not originate from Africa. They were brought to Africa through trade from southern America.

None of the tubers originated from Africa.
