Many stories around the day (St. Valentine's Day aka the feast of St. Valentine), but it started out as a liturgical celebration of saints named Valentinus and was first associated with romantic love in England in the 18th century where according to Wiki, "it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery and sending greeting cards." Merchants capitalized on the association with romance for reasons mentioned in my previous post and the rest is history.

No one has to buy into the consumerism for ANY holiday. I have always said that receiving 1 rose is much more romantic than a dozen roses. Also spending $5 on a few Godiva chocolates is not going to break the bank for anyone.

Also, one can always purchase scones and pastries for little and nothing and surprise their lady with afternoon tea when she comes home. If you aren't into sandwiches, and many Jamaican men aren't, what's wrong with serving cocktail patties.
