Quite controlling! Thats what started the discussion- the boyriend is extremely jealous, and even scrolls through her phone, mail etc. So while he was explaining niece;s situation, he reported on his own ignorance about wife's account. This is a blue collar/exec union, so she makes mroe, but still! Shouldnt he know?

This sounds like how I think most people handle finances. Some have a separate personal account, and divvy earnings joint checking, joint savings and personal savings, so there may be some ignorance of the balance in each, but.. he was suggesting that he's unaware of her exact salary. Yes he was pointing out niece's unbalanced relationship (sounding like Blugiant's thread about violent men and women who choose them)...

I think this is true of the older generation, where a wife learns of $ AND debt after the husband dies.... but somehow in my mind, I thought that yhounger, dual income families, are more aware of the <span style="text-decoration: underline">household </span>income. Maybe because of taxes, or as we become more comfortable planning daily living, home purchases/renovatgions, investments and major purchases together.
