Chapter V

Everything was foggy. A thick mist seemed to weigh her down. It did not soothe her, it was not her friend so she fought against it; struggling to reach the surface. Her eyes opened and the mist hung on, clinging to everything except the white. Mya blinked and her eyelids felt heavy. They wanted to remain closed but she refused to let them. She opened her eyes as wide as she could, but they were really just slits in her face, because her eyes were swollen as was her face. She tried to swallow and the pain caused her to wince.

&quot;Shh,&quot; someone said, their voice coming from far away. &quot;Here, sip on this.&quot;

A straw was put to her mouth, the coldness of the polypropylene plastic against her dry lips making her wince again. She tried to turn her head away and felt the resistance. She put her hand up to her neck and felt the brace. Panic overcame her and she struggled to get up, to speak.

&quot;Shh!&quot; the voice was firmer as was the hand that pressed against her shoulder. &quot;Don't get up. No sudden moves, or you'll just aggravate your injuries. C'mon, drink this. Try, it'll help.&quot;

Mya's heart fluttered furiously against her breastbone, but she couldn't move even if she wanted to. The lethargy was overwhelming and the most she could do was take a brief halfhearted pull at the straw. The cool water barely crested her lips before the mist swallowed her again.

Sgt Westcott was furious. He clenched his hands so tightly his nails drew blood. He smacked the wall, then clenched his fists and punched it instead. The pain crackled along his knuckles and his phalanges before numbing his hand. He dropped his hand and groaned.

&quot;[censored] retards!&quot; he swore. The pain in his hand asked if he should not probably lump himself into the same category. He flexed his fingers, his eyes trained on the glass door of the back of the police centre. <span style="font-style: italic">They</span> were in there. The stupid punks who had hit <span style="font-style: italic">her</span>. Dumbasses. Didn't know which [censored] end was up yet they were allowed behind the steering wheel. And now their stupidity, the plain <span style="font-style: italic">lunacy</span> of their being permitted to drive, almost cost her her life.

Paul Westcott grounded his teeth in frustration. He knew it was a good thing that he was not in the room with them right now. He knew it because he knew he would not, <span style="font-style: italic">could not</span> be held responsible for whatever he would do - <span style="font-style: italic">could do</span> to them, [censored] uniform be damned! [censored] dumb asinine inbreeds!

He took a deep breath and forced the image of the car striking Mya from his mind. He tried to gather his thoughts, focusing them on her. But the anger changed direction and suddenly he was furious at her. Why was she out that late at night? Walking in the dark, wearing dark clothing with not even a reflective bracelet on her? Sure she was on the side walk, but why there? [censored]! Nobody lives <span style="font-style: italic">there</span>! Did she have a death wish or something? Paul knew he would have to go back to the hospital to see her, to get her statement so as to complete his report. He knew he shouldn't be angry at her, but he couldn't help it. He remembered her. How she had given him the slip, made him look foolish. He remembered how he'd become convinced that she needed help, that she'd been hurt.

Well she was hurt now, alright. But he couldn't go see her while he was this mad. He would do more harm than good. Oh what the hell, he may as well.

&quot;Hey Jimmy! I gotta go see the vic. Catch up with ya later.&quot; The other constable waved him off and Sgt Westcott jogged down the steps to the cruiser. He got in and didn't buckle up. The tires screeched a bit as he swung out of the complex. The hospital was West. He turned East. Oh what the hell, he may as well.

Jeffrey had knocked and waited. The anxiety had long given way to disappointment then hurt - which surprised him - and then to anger. Was she deliberately avoiding him? He'd wanted to bang on the door, to force her to open it but he didn't. He knew how nosy apartment dwellers were. That's why he didn't live in an apartment building. People living on top of each like rats or whatever. Ugh! She should be [censored] lucky <span style="font-style: italic">he</span> was here to see <span style="font-style: italic">her</span>! Yet she's in there playing hard to get. [censored] head games. Like he had time for that [censored].

Yes he'd knocked and waited. Done the decent thing. Had even walked away, until he'd seen from the outside that her balcony was really quite accessible. If you were as agile and as supple as he was. Of course the sliding doors weren't locked. Why would they be? He chuckled softly to himself as he slid them open. His heart was beating a mile a minute and saliva pooled in his mouth. He swallowed and pressed his tongue to the roof of his mouth, as he listened out for her. He wanted to call her name. To say it just like he had on his way over. But he knew that silence would be better.

Jeffrey slid the door closed behind him and closed the vertical blinds. The room was in darkness but he would have no trouble finding his way.

Nunya If I said &quot;perfect&quot; would I be jinxing myself? lol It's funny how some things just work out-- albeit, as long as you are receptive and open to the currents of change. I'm teaching a course I designed as an English/theatre class at an alternative high school is fall. War of the Worlds: Fear and the Power of Media. Our final project is a revised/contemporary version of Orson Welles 1938 radio broadcast. Our own unique Halloween Martian invasion fright-fest. Soooo much fun, I can't believe I'm getting paid..... lol
