Re: Collateral Damage
It didn’t take long before Allison discovered what was going on between Drew and Q. About 2 weeks after the episode at Nigel’s home, Allison found herself at the home of her Dept Chairperson to pick up some files. It surprised her (not really) to see that Q was sitting in the kitchen drinking a glass of lemonade. “Hey Allison, what’s up? Haven’t seen you in a minute.” Allison responded, “It’s hasn’t been that long Q, more like two weeks?” The Dept Chairperson offered Allison a glass of lemonade, but Allison declined. She didn’t plan on staying. The Dept. Chairperson turned on her computer and asked Allison for her portable hard drive and began to transfer files. Then the DC said, “Honey, you might as well put your feet up. This transfer is going to take at least 20 minutes.”
The three began to make small talk about school politics when Nigel’s name was mentioned by the Dept. Chairperson. “I really hope someone rains him in soon. He really is getting to big for his britches.” Q shot the Dept Chairperson a dirty look and the Dept. Chairperson retorted, “I’m sorry, I know how you feel about Mr. Nigel. And now like how you’re almost married into the family.” Q’s shoulders slumped. Allison pounced, “Married? What?” Q straitened up and said sheepishly, “Nigel’s cousin, Drew and I are dating.” Allison answered back with a fake confused look, “Drew, I thought that I knew most of his family. Do I know this cousin Drew?” Q answered, “Yes, remember you met him at Nigel’s house party. He’s in the Air Force?” Allison responded, “Vaguely.”
The file transfer was complete and Allison made preparations to say goodbye. While she was putting her hard drive in its case Q approached her and said, “You go over to Nigel’s often, don’t you?” Allison said, “Sometimes, but not like it’s all the time. Why?” Q came back, “No. It’s just that I hardly see you over there when I am hanging. I thought that you guys were close.” Allison (now seriously confused) said, “I go over there sometimes for dinner when Nigel’s wife cooks. Mostly when I am driving by from school. It isn’t anything that is planned. She will call and if I can I stop by.” Q laughed in a nervous kind of way and then said, “Yeah, that’s what I meant. I thought I’d have seen you more. I am over there like all the time with Drew.” There was a nervous pause and then she said, “Maybe I’ll see you over there again.”
Allison left.
So that was what was going on. She knew that this thing with Drew and Q wasn’t going to end up going well. She knew that she should even bother to get involved. But she thought back on the times when she saw Drew, Drew’s girl friend that WAS NOT Q, and Nigel. She thought back on the conversation she overheard between Drew and Nigel. Their looks. She was going to ask Nigel directly what was going on. The bottom line was that things were not right. She considered Q a friend.
