Q already know what going on. (not details but enough). she doan have no house or car or pikney with him.... not even going out with him for that long, and she choose to go to him house and kick een door and go on with foolishness.

The next few days, Nigel busied himself with his the big Meet. If he pulled this off, he would surely secure his name as one of the winning-est and productive coaches in the area. Joy lent assistance and was happy to do so, as it kept her away from home. Felandre and Q work during the day and then in the evenings supported Joy and worked on their applications. Allison taught her classes and then went home. The energy at Severn School was high; everyone was excited about the Meet. Everyone waited with bated breath for it to begin.

During the lunch hour, Allison ran into Joy. “Girl, where the hell have you been? Damn. All hidin’” Allison laughed and said, “I could ask you the same. How’s it going?” Joy shook her head and responded, “Working.like.a.damned.dog that’s how it’s going. This Meet is about to kill me.” Allison asked, “But it’s coming good right?” Joy eagerly replied, “Yeah, yeah. Nigel is getting ready to have them kids kick it out the park tonight and tomorrow. I am really excited. That’s my boy!” “So, he’s doing it, huh, Joy,” Allison asked. Joy laughed, “Is he ever. You gonna make an appearance tonight Ms. Allison? I know how you don’t come out to nothing.” Allison faked hurt feelings, “Yes. I even made plans to meet up with some folks for dinner and then we are coming back.” Joyce seemed to make a connection, “Yeah, I heard from Q about that, but Joy does not hang with those people, so y’all go ahead. Besides I still have much to do before things officially kick off. Matter of fact, I’ll talk to you later. I see the Business Manager and I need to get this check from her for tonight. Later.”

Allison did not really feel like going tonight, but now that she gave her word. What could she do?

When Allison arrived at the restaurant, she saw that festivities were well underway. A bunch of school folks were already at the bar, had ordered drinks and was eating. She recognized her Dept Chairperson and walked over. Allison greeted, “Hey there!” Her Dept Chairperson feigned surprise and said, “Holy Mother of God, Allison is out in public with us.” Allison played along, “I know can you believe it. I see everyone’s here.” She did not see Q. It was as if her Dept. Chairperson read her mind, “Q is around here somewhere. You know she never misses an opportunity to socialize. But she doesn’t look good.” Allison gave an inquiring look, “Oh?” The Dept. Chairperson continued, “Yeah, she really looks tired and she’s been excusing herself and going out to talk on her phone. You ask me, people only act like that when there is trouble on the home front.”

As the Dept. Chairperson made her remark, Q walked back into the room. She was busy sending a text and she looked angry. She walked up to the bar and slammed her phone on the bar. “Hey Allison. I need a drink. What you drinking? Bartender.” Allison looked at Q and then at her Dept Chairperson and said, “I’ll have a glass of Zinfindel.” Q ordered a Miller from the tap. Allison was relieved when her Dept Chairperson took the lead, “Q, what the heck? You still arguing with the guy?” Q just shook her head. The bartender came over and served the drinks. Q raised her glass and took a long drink of her beer. Allison did not know what to make of the sight. The Dept. Chairperson finally broke the odd silence, “Q, this guy really has you in a tizzy?” Q quipped back, “You could say that.” She took another drink. The Dept. Chairperson continued, “What? Is he not coming out tonight?” Q took another drink and then said, “Yeah, with some BS about him having to work.” Allison interjected, “Maybe he does have to work.” Q cut her off, “What the hell ever. He knows how much tonight means to me. To Nigel. I swear to God.” Then Q cut her own self off and took another drink. The Dept. Chairperson interjected with a sad look on her face, “Maybe the two of you need a break, Q? You guys are fighting an awful lot.” Q just shook her head and continued to drink her beer. After a moment of awkward silence, Q said, “He only seems to do right when we fight or he’s in my bed.” She cut herself off and took another drink. The Dept. Chairperson said, “Well have you ever known a man who wants to do wrong while they are getting some?” Q shot her a very dirty look. The Dept. Chairperson sheepishly said, “Bad Joke. Sorry.”

Q picked up her phone and began another text message. Allison could take no more. She put her hand on Q’s hand and said, “Q, put the phone down.” Q looked at her with a puzzled look. Allison’s heart began to beat fast and she said, “Yeah, put it down. Q, we need to talk.”

The Dept. Chairperson, Allison and Q left the bar and walked onto the parking lot. “Why don’t you let me drive you home, Q? You live near here correct,” Allison offered. She noticed that Q began to breathe heavily and walk as if she had too much to drink. “Naw! I can drive. I just don’t like when people start treating me like I am going to break,” Q said in an eerily calm manner.

Allison drove Q home. The Dept. Chairperson followed behind in Q’s car. The trio walked inside Q’s home. Allison noticed that Q’s home looked very similar to her office. Cluttered. Allison now understood why Q always said that she had to look for things, even though she said they were in her home. “Ya’ll want something to drink?” Q offered. Allison declined, but the Dept. Chairperson asked for lemonade and began to look through Q’s full bar. She picked up a bottle of Grey Goose and said, “Ah.” Allison sat down on the sofa the only uncluttered spot in the place.

The silence was deafening. Allison jumped when the Dept. Chairman said “whoa!” Apparently she spilled something in the kitchen. She grabbed some paper towels from the dispenser. Q went to her patio door, looked through the blinds and said, “I check on my bike every time I come home. My first one got stolen right after I moved here.” She continued to look out the door and then she said, “So how bad is it, Allison?” For some reason Allison felt like she was about to burst into tears at any moment. She felt the way used to feel when she was a little girl and her mother instructed her to pick her own switch for her whipping. Q turned from the patio door and then asked again, “How bad is it? What is Drew hiding?” When Allison didn’t answer, Q began to hurl one question after the other, “He’s married? He has kids? He couldn’t possibly have a record; he’s in the military. He uses drugs? What?” Q was beginning to plead.

“He has a girl friend,” Allison said calmly. She was surprised at how calm her voice sounded. She looked up and the Dept. Chairperson was grimacing as if the drink she had made for herself was a glass of bad tasting medicine. Q walked over to the sofa and sat down next to Allison. “How long has he had one? I mean I kinda suspected. He has been acting crazy for a minute,” Q finally admitted. Allison answered, “He’s had one all along Q.” The Dept. Chairperson said, “Damn.” Q began to laugh, “from the what? You mean he just started seeing someone else?” Allison responded, “No. He’s had one the entire time. The one he had when he met you.” Q’s mind began to race and her mouth divulged what she was thinking. “He broke up with that girl that he had when I met him. I saw the texts. We are together like ALL the time.” Q didn't push that point, as everyone in the room knew that her comment wasn't true. Allison felt bad but divulged anyway, “I’ve met her, Q.” The Dept. Chairperson gasped and then took a drink from her glass. Q looked confused and then said, “What do you mean you’ve met her? When? Where?” Allison let the information flow from her, “She was at Nigel’s when I was over there for dinner. She seemed to know her way around their place. They were all chatting it up about things they had done together. You know?” Q came back quick, “No. No I don’t know. Nigel knows this chick?” Allison simply said, “Yes.” Q didn’t say anything, but her eyes told Allison that she wanted more information. “Look, I wanted to tell you for a while Q. I was over there once when you called and Drew was sitting right there and Nigel told you he hadn’t seen him,” Allison continued trying to get everything off of her chest. Q said in a defeated sounding voice, “And you’ve seen this girl.”

Allison didn’t answer because Q wrapped her arms around herself and began to cry.

The alarm from a cell phone jarred the trio awake. The Dept Chairperson said in a half asleep half horrified tone, “Damn, it’s 4:30 am. Why you ask? This thing goes off every morning at this time, so that Maggie can go out.” She paused and then said, “Jesus.” Allison tried to stretch, but noticed that her feet were pressed against Q’s back. They had fallen asleep on the sofa. She decided to try and sit up instead. She made eye contact with the Dept. Chairperson, who directed her head toward the sleeping Q. It was then that Allison remembered arguing with Nigel on the phone and watching Q cry her self to sleep. It was then that the Dept. Chairperson suggested that it wasn’t a good idea to leave her alone. The Dept. Chairperson’s words, “I dunno, Allison, but I’ve never seen her like this. She may try to do something stupid to that guy or god forbid…herself,” played again in Allison’s head. The two could not think of one person that Q could call. No relatives. New York. But where? Who?

Neither Allison nor the Dept. Chairperson noticed that Q had awakened. They both were both pulled away from their individual thoughts when they heard Q say, “What the hell time is it?” Allison responded, “It’s going on 5 am.” Q simply shook her head and then looked around. She then got up from the sofa and went to her patio door and looked out the window. Her eyes looked pleased for an instant. Her bike was still there. Then in an instant her eyes filled again with sadness and then tears. Q began to sob again. “What are you feeling, kiddo,” asked the Dept. Chairperson, “maybe if you can talk it’ll help you feel better.” Q continued to look out the patio door window and then said, “I am hurt. I feel real dumb. I am embarrassed. I mean…every damned body knew I was being played but me.” The Dept. Chairperson, trying to clear her name, responded, “I found out the sordid details just like you did Honey.” She coughed and then sheepishly admitted, “But I kinda figured though.”

Q sighed and then said between a softer sob, “Well I’m blown. I didn’t know jack.” Allison found Q’s comment rather perplexing. Seriously, how could she have not known? Allison hardly noticed that Q was now staring at her. Allison all of sudden felt vulnerable. Q saw her eyes and took the opportunity, “Allison, so you say that Nigel knew about this? I saw that you were talking all loud with him on the phone.” Allison said simply, “I was loud because he was loud.” “About what,” Q asked. “He was angry. He said that I should’ve stayed out of it. That it was none of my business. I hung up on him because I think he was wrong for knowing what was going on and not saying anything.” Q’s look said that she was still not totally convinced about what Allison had to say. Allison picked up on it and then said, “Q, he knew. Like I said he directly lied to you right in front of me about Drew. The girl was sitting right there. I’ve heard Drew joke about you NOT being his girlfriend and saying that you were ‘pressed’ whatever that means. Nigel knew before you told him that you went to Drew’s house that time. Drew told him he didn’t open the door and that you almost kicked the door in.” At that last comment the Dept. Chairperson looked at Q and almost seemed to notice her for the first time. She managed to crack a faint smile. Q didn’t notice the Dept. Chairperson.

She asked Allison the most direct question of the morning, “So why did you tell me?” Q’s question startled Allison and it took a second for her to absorb the question. Q rephrased the question; “I mean why did you tell me about Drew? Just about everyone else knew and said nothing. Why did you?” Allison cleared her throat and then said, “People have the right to do what they want to do. But when people are in a relationship...” Allison was trying to find the correct words, “In man and women things, people should have all the facts. Then they can decide. I mean…if he told you, ‘look I have someone. She goes out of town a lot. I am not leaving her, but we can still do this if you want’ and then you decided yeah…then hey YOU decided.” The Dept. Chairperson interjected a loud, “Ha! Yeah right! What man is going to say all that?” Allison shot back, “You’d be surprised.” The Dept. Chairperson laughed, “Yeah, you’re right, I would be surprised.” Allison began to feel a bit defensive and said, “Well let me be naïve then. Look Q, the bottom line is at the end of the day…I’d want someone to tell me.”

There was an awkward silence. Even though there was a lot more to say. No one knew quite how to bring it up. Finally, the Dept. Chairperson broke the silence, &quot;Q, what will you do now?&quot; Q sighed and then said, &quot;I have no effin clue.&quot; Tears had begun to stream down her face again. &quot;I do know that Nigel and I are going to have a conversation. I mean...he hurt my feelings the most.&quot; Q began to cry even harder. She managed to say again, &quot;Nigel hurt my feelings the most. He is going to have to explain himself.&quot;

Allison's mind filled with dread. She was going to have to face Nigel too.
