I was watching an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where he was struggling to call Debra's mom anything. She had a phone call and on the verge of saying "hey you" (which would not have identified who he was speaking to in the room) tapped her on the shoulder.
I did have that problem. Mr. and Mrs. L suddenly felt too formal and left me in an awkward place about what to call them. Now the ex-hubby did call my parents mom and dad, but I just couldn't do it.
I was left in that sort of empty space where I had to make eye contact and start talking and not actually say a name.
