I was watching an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where he was struggling to call Debra's mom anything. She had a phone call and on the verge of saying "hey you" (which would not have identified who he was speaking to in the room) tapped her on the shoulder. 
I did have that problem. Mr. and Mrs. L suddenly felt too formal and left me in an awkward place about what to call them. Now the ex-hubby did call my parents mom and dad, but I just couldn't do it.
I was left in that sort of empty space where I had to make eye contact and start talking and not actually say a name.

have not had that problem
cause she did tell me not to call her that..but old habits were hard to break
Say boyfriends parents are John Jones and Martha Jones... (I think once married it becomes a lot easier
