Do you prefer a Jamaican mate?

Why ro why not? I'm Jamerican, in a secluded part of VA/Metro DC now where I really miss Jamaican food, music, friends and so on. Ideally, I keep thinking it's best to date a guy from JA since I prefer the culture. I got a ride from a nice Somalian guy today(loads of east africans here) and as he was describing the foods and music I kept thinking 'yeah but that don't compare to [insert jamaican food])'

Then I keep getting this thing with thinking I should try white since there are so many in this area as well but then I go back to thinking it would be particularly nice if whoever the guy is he be caribbean so I can enjoy the reggae and food with him more.

Question for the guys and gyals here: Did or do you prefer a Jamaican mate? Do you think you can hold onto your culture while in a longterm relationship or marriage with a non-west indian?

When you say mate do mean someone to date or someone to marry?

Do you think you would lose out or miss out on something if you were to date a non-Caribbean person? Or do you think your own knowledge of your foods, music and so on would be enough so you don't feel estranged from your own culture and what you love?

I love my yard man...and I have an affinity for Trinidadian men also. I would date a man regardless of his culture so long as he took a genuine in terest in learning and appreciating mine...if I were still dating that is.

Do you have an uncle or other relative that you could share things with, could cook for you and so on or is that totally different?

No preference. I'm married to a man from another island and im nuh mek mi more or less happier than a Jamacian man. Mi is as yahdie as they come and he appreciates mi cuture and I appreciate his. Here's a secret... mi get lots a heck from yahdie man beause I married outside the "box"

What about finding a mate from a different place in the world who you can teach about your country? One who will eventually love and appreciates your culture, if not already?

I mean, I am not a Jamaican woman but I still love and appreciate Jamaican food, music, history, culture...etc. I loved Jamaica long before I met Red, being with him has only taught me more and deepened my appreciation for his home.

Granted, I will never be able to cook stew peas and rice the way his mother does (there is just something about the fresh coconut that I can't seem to get right.) Or be able to rattle off Jamaican proverbs the way his Grandmother does, but at least I understand most of them and if I don't I find it fun to learn the meanings.
