'This is where the sociologists step in and people think through the implications of that but we have got a gap in educational performance here that goes all the way through our schools and universities, and I want to see an improvement in educational opportunities for men and women because it does look as if the challenge we particularly face in our society at the moment is that the boys are lagging behind the girl

Marrying down as you call it, is a matter of simple math. Stats have shown that black women obtain more education than black men. I read somewhere recently that the gap was narrowing, but still exists.

And while some women are 'marrying down', others still have the opportunity to 'marry up'...which shrinks your desired pool even more.

On some university campuses there are 7 Black females for every 1 Black male. I have long thought that universities should have a more balanced admissions policies. There is a huge imbalance between White females and White males on campus too. I think it is as high as 4:1 on some campuses. That is why some White women who would not have considered interracial marriage are now willing to cross racial lines to find partners.

I need to find those stats but in the meantime:

<span style="font-style: italic">To be an educated Black male amongst what is described as a “dying breed” is an amazing feeling. The benefits that come from being an educated black male stretch so far and wide; they hold so much power. But the one that excites me the most of them all is the fact that the dating pool expands further than the Foot Locker sales associates I was once accustomed to dating. Let me explain.

The ratio of Black men to women is somewhere around 87 to 100 black women. Subtract the high school dropouts, gay Black men, Black men that date White women exclusively, guys under around 5’8, and who do you have to compete with? Maybe 30, 40 other guys per every 100 Black women. Those odds are about as sweet as Carl Winslow.

Even prior to graduation, you see the saddening dearth of Black men on any college campus, be it a PWI or HBCU. You think that’s bad, subtract the athletes from the student body and it becomes depressing. The programs I go into on college campuses always seem to have like five other Black guys in there (granted, that total goes up by a bit when there is a party).

So the dating pool reads as follows: Nurses. Journalists. Aforementioned Foot Locker sales associates. Women in Black sororities. Teachers. Principals. Hairdressers (a personal fetish). Business suit wearing sistas that work downtown. Hooters workers. Stewardesses. Add the White women and Latina women that dig Black guys and the pool now looks like an ocean.

So here comes the dilemma that educated Black men face: When there is a dating ocean full of choices, why eat Orange Roughy every day? Once every educated Black male discovers the ratio, it’s as if a chemical malfunction takes place.

It’s understandable why so many Black women (especially educated) are single, because the odds definitely are NOT in their favor. While there is an increase in the men “qualified” to date educated Black women exclusively, many choose not to just for the simple fact that there are so many other educated Black women on the market. In other words, the grass not only seems greener on the other side, but many times it is. Hello! *complete with Ray Charles voice*</span>

...but 100% of the women are 100% qualifed...even the hookers, table dancers and of course the cocktail raises seem to be at the top of the list of elligible women for many guys....especially if they are wearing boxing gloves instead of tops like one of Usain's flings.

married, yes. settled, no. always have mi eyes peeled fi a future ex husband.

but on a serious note, the dating world looks very sticky for black women today. when i go out there is not one black man i see that i would want to speak to even if i wanted to. recently i dragged a girlfriend of mine to an alumni event and even though i went to a PWI there were quite a few brothers there who i recognized from my year and lawd dem look fine inna dem suit an tie but as the evening wore on I noticed their attention was focused on the white and spanish girls there. so typical of many successful black men these days. but anyways it matters not to me cah mi nah look none a dem. I suppose if I were in search of a solid black man I would feel hopeless...
