I agree...all kinds of side effects with these methods that sometimes docs don't even know about b/c they are released on the market (for profit) before the side effects can be determined. Scary sometimes...and I think some of the effects are different for each person.

All forms of contraception have side effects and risks associated. However these have to be weighed against the benefits.

In particular the avoidance of an unwanted pregnancy. This has far greater risks than any hormonal preparation. Effective use of contraception particularly in the developing world would save the lives of 1000's+ of women who die during pregnancy every year.

Some womens fertility levels are reduced initially after stopping the pill or injection. But returns to the levels it would have been when there periods return. There is absolutely no increase in the rate of miscarriage or later pregnancy loss above the rate which preexists after using contraceptives. This thankfully is a myth.

the books can say one thing but I want to know about personal experiences.

i also am not saying that there aren't benefits to the birth control. clearly there are but i want to be fully knowledgable of what could happen.

Ok. I take your point. But peoples indivdual experiences serve only to bias people against things which have been studied upon thousands. There are lots of horror stories about the use of contraception eg women dieing of pulmonary embolism after starting the pill, contracting severe life threatening infection after the insertion of a coil etc etc...

However if we base our choices on the basis of one individuals experience and ignore the benefits found by the majority, then it makes scientific study and evaluation a waste of time.

The fact that the death rate from pregnancy far far out weighs that of women using contraception is the key issue. Of course the risks of any medication should be fully explained and considered, and an informed choice made. The only truely safe contraception is abstinence! Not something I would advocate for a happy healthy life.

thx for this thread I am thinking of getting it but man I hear it hurts to put in and the doctor suggest putting it in when aunt flo is in town cause it is less painful but i dont think I can manage anybody going down there at that time. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif[/img]

more like a *pinch* kinda like when dem doing a pap smear

but of course the experience is different for each person.

they usually do it at the beginning/ or end of your period when the flow is lightest...its really not a big deal for the doctor and in the scheme of things wasnt a big deal for me either.

Let me share what I know.

There are 2 common types of IUD. One contains no hormones, if you have heavy periods it can make them a bit worse, if they're light you should be ok. The other contains a small amount of progesterone. It can cause irregular bleeding at first but eventually periods are much lighter or disappear altogether - no more Aunt Flo - Hurrah!

As to the insertion it should be no more than a bit uncomfortable, especially if you've had children. Otherwise they can be inserted easily with the use of a bit of local anaesthetic. The reason it's better to put in near a period is because for one it's easier and also it means your're not pregnant.

IUD's are not perfect. There are risks and complications. The main concern for women is infection. I think if your not in a steady relationship you still need to use condoms and should be screened before it's put in. However surprisingly it's been found that after 42 days, with the type that deliver hormone. the risk of infection is actually less than if it wasn't in - go figure!

Lots of female gynaecologists use the mirena coil - which is the type with the hormone.

Remember. If you don't like it it can just be removed.

She had NO WORD OF A LIE 6 consecutive misscarrages before she finally managed to carry one to term. AND this was after waiting the full year being off Depo before trying.

for myself when I went of it I had very heavy bleeding for 8 months, non-stop for 8 months complete with cramps and all the baggage that a regular period comes with. I became severly anemic and suffered hairloss as a result. it was finally stopped with a very high single dose of hormone.

I have not been back on BC since......

I took the pill for many years prior to Depo and other than occasionally forgetting to take it I had no problems with it. Alesse and yasmin and a few other brands.

I know everyone's body is different and blah blah but for someone to say there are no serious side effect to birthcontrol...gimmie a break, go do some research and talk to people who have personal experince not the drug maker who is trying to make a buck.

I had a similar experience with Depo...after the first shot a bled continuously for 5 months...my primary at the time was confused and just pumped me full of iron supplements...I finally found a docter that finally got the bleeding to stop...with hormone therapy also......

I used the patch after that...but it caused very long heavy periods and I stopped using b/c for about a year and a half now....and feel great the patch gave me very bad PMS the craps were felt even in my legs

no matter how much research and what the odds are. if I see people around me, who are like me, come from a similar place like me, live in the same area like me, eat like me (the list goes on) and I see certain things happen to them. that personal experience is going to override what is on a piece of paper to me.

and honestly they could be very different from me too. Personal experience still holds more weight, cause just the chance of it happening is enough for me to raise mi yeyebrows and question.
