nothing is wrong with her skin color. she is a beautiful person as well. i am just saying that if it were a darker skinned rasta they would not have let them in the school.

Twenty-year-old Kerrie Baylis on Saturday walked away with lucrative prizes and the mandate to represent Jamaica at the Miss World competition in South Africa later this year.

After making several appearances, with fellow contestants, the 5 feet 10 inches beauty was awarded the title, Miss Jamaica World (MJW) 2009 at the grand coronation show, last Saturday at The Jamaica Pegasus.

&quot;I did not expect it,&quot; a super excited Baylis told The Gleaner after the show. &quot;May be my answer to the question put me over the top,&quot; she added.

Perhaps she is correct. The contestants were all judged on beauty of face, figure, charm, personality and ability to converse. And while all 18 fulfilled the first two criteria, it was in the chit-chat segment where the top-10 contestants (chosen through MJW Fast Track competitions and selection on coronation night), conversed with one of the hosts of the show, Paula-Anne Porter-Jones, that the unveiling of the winner began.

At the end of the chit-chat, the five remained smiling were the crowd favourites Keri-Ann Bridgewater, Stephanie Hazle, Kamila McDonald, Calee Scharschmidt along with Kerrie Baylis.

But, it was Baylis who had the full house cheering with her response to judge Imani Duncan's (another former MJW Queen) question: If she had the power, how would she solve the Jamaican economic crisis? Confidently, she replied in part, she would &quot;cut down on agricultural import&quot;.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Final results</span>

Bridgewater, Hazle and Scharschmidt also gave creditable responses to questions from other former MJW Queens Laurel Williams-Demercado, Desiree DePass-Pullen and Terri-Karelle Reid. But in the end, their answers were not good enough to give them the crown. And when the final results were announced, Hazle was placed third and Bridgewater second.

Bridgewater also received The Gleaner-sponsored sectional prize for the Most Aware contestant, while Kimberly Patterson was adjudged the Most Congenial by her fellow contestants. Christina Benjamin won the 'Beauty with a Purpose award' for her One Love Charity project. The show's theme was 'Beauty With a Purpose'.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Mixed views</span>

Earlier, the show got off to a spirited start with a dance from the Stella Maris Dance Ensemble. And the contestants made four appearances before the top 10 were announced.

Along with the Stella Maris Dance Ensemble, entertainment for the show was provided by D'Angel, I-Octane, Hezron and an upcoming vocalist named Denyque.

And so it was not surprising that when the spectacular Miss Jamaica World 2009 grand coronation show concluded, the audience had mixed views on the results.

Sports analyst Toni-Ann Doyley and student Natalee Jones agreed with the judges' decisions. However, Stephen Gabbadon believed that the more charismatic Bridgewater should have won.

Joining Porter-Jones as host for the evening was former MJW winner Yendi Phillipps.

Chief judge was Tommy James. Other former beauty queens Alison Cross, Sara Lawrence and Tonya Toyloy-Williams, along with Clive Williams, completed the list of judges.

i've learned that jamaican beauty pageant winners (esp. of miss jamaica world, which for some reason has more cachet than miss jamaica universe) occupy a special elite circle. they are instantly, on receiving the title, top marriage prospects for rich men and/or men with status. it's a form of achievement that has nothing to do with education.

in many cases the title is really &quot;purchased&quot; - the girl's puppa or guardian having paid in advance for the result.

Why the fuss? Yes BLACK girls were in the contest also. But they were not good enough. Kerrie won the Pageant fair and square.

I agree that there are some Fabulous Black girls in Jamaica, but the competitive ones are not entering the Pageants. Why dont we encourage the bright ones to enter and stop this thing about white girl black girl. It comes up every time. The Race card is easy to play.

I am asking this questions to all the bashers...Were you following the pageant? Did u see or listen to the other girls in this years pageant ? WHo would you have given the crown to?

Kamila could have won yet she blew the final Question. So dont blame the girl for winning. Come on celebrate her victory.
She was classy and she did well

No wonder we can't pull down a Miss World title. We still insist on choosing these types of women to represent a country that is 95% black. Sooo glad athletics is not as subjective and frought with prejudices as these types of contest where the blacks and browns in the population can soar to greatness. I'm ashamed each time I look around and see who they continue to chose to represent Jamaica.

May I remind Brien that the motto is &quot;out of many, one people&quot; and NOT &quot;out of many, BLACK people&quot;. Jamaica is a culturally diverse nation, all races represented. To say that the winner is not representative of Jamaica because she is not black is pure ignorance. Should America not have chosen Obama for president because he does not represent the majority race of the country? The truth is that Ms. Baylis did perform the best the night of the coronation, do you suggest we not crown her because she is not black? I believe you are the one with prejudices and am glad someone with your bias was not on the judging panel. I ashamed to have people as closed minded and ignorant as you call yourself Jamaican.

K.C., glad you mention Obama! what that is saying is that at least America, if only for a moment, is willing to transcend its prejudices and pick the most QUALIFIED person for the office of President. Do your own review of the Miss Jamaica over the years? Do they represent this 'out of many' that you are quick to point to? Since 1962, it means that we should have had a larger percentage of 'dark skin' sisters, more representative of the populace winning this competition. you and others like you still have self-hatred. short, curly, thick hair crowning a dark complexion of a face does not equal beauty to you. Know what though, I'm glad that these other beautiful, dark skin women, who are intelligent and talented do not subject themselves to have their beauty judged by colonials with a deep seated hatred for their people. time and time again they have by-passed the best and the brightest in the Miss Jamaica beauty pageant for the lite-brites who, when appear on the world stage, have the rest of the world wondering, what the heck is with Jamaica in sending us these washouts? she ain't the one, sorry!!! </span>

After almost two weeks, Kerrie Baylis still has moments when she just sits and looks at her sash and crown. It's a bit surreal to the 20-year-old that she is Miss Jamaica World 2009. &quot;I'm trying to get used to it, that I'm Miss Jamaica. I have people coming up to me in the street and congratulating me, people I don't know.&quot;

Speaking with Flair last week, the bubbly social butterfly admitted that this wasn't in her plans. Though her sister Kaprina entered the competition a few years ago, it was a friend who encouraged young Baylis to enter. &quot;It wasn't a plan, a friend was pushing me and it opened up a platform to make a difference to give back to a country that has given so much to me,&quot; she said.

Though she is not short on confidence, Baylis never thought she would win. &quot;You hope to, but don't expect it. I just had to be the best I can be. I worked hard that night and performed my best.&quot; There were only five available spots in the top 10 on coronation night as the others were secured by winners of the five fast track competitions held prior to the big night.

Fate sealed

Her fate may have been sealed by the question she was asked by former beauty queen Imani Duncan, who asked Baylis, if she had the power, how would she solve Jamaica's economic crisis. Baylis responded that she would cut down on agricultural imports.

&quot;It was easy for me as my father is in manufacturing. I'm pretty glad I got that question.&quot;

While the judges tabulated their scores, the top five, Kamila McDonald, Keri-Ann Bridgewater, Stephanie Hazle, Calee Scharschmidt and Kerrie Baylis, waited with bated breath.

&quot;Those five minutes were the longest of my life,&quot; recalled the beauty queen. She remembers that when her name was called, &quot;It's an adrenaline rush. Just shock and excitement&quot;.

Baylis is very excited about what the year will hold for her and about representing Jamaica at the Miss Word finals in Johannesburg, South Africa, in December. During her reign, she hopes to focus on not just one project, but on projects that will benefit Jamaica as a whole. However, working with hospitals is something she would really love to do as her sister Kaprina has apraxic ameinia and myloid displacia. Though not a match for her, Baylis is a registered bone marrow donor.
