a lot of defensiveness here. curiosity about the texture of black folks hair is very common among non-black children - a so pickney tan, dem si supm dem no see before dem waan know bout it. i wouldn't necessarily ascribe it to exoticism or racism. but dat a me.

anyway, so many black women aim to have their hair like white women's hair, that i'd think seeing natural black hair would be a novelty for white folks. as i say to my daughters constantly, if a nain fi black men nuff people who watch tv wouldnt know seh black ppl have nappy hair.

BTW, this thread reminds me of the earlier discussion about black girls with creme hair and the effect this has on their physical activity.

MG, I thought of that thread this past weekend when I went to a water park. I was so scared to get my hair wet that I did not participate but in the end I did and totally enjoyed it. My hair did not suffer as a result.

i don't think it's defensive at all;
i can't imagine being chinese & asked about my eyes all the time...it's kinda silly since they've been around here forever & we're all human, despite different physical characteristics...
but eventually black women will lose the fear of being themselves & people can stop taking our natural hair as some sort of abnormality;

after all it is us who are practicing the mental slavery against our own selves...so like the man seh- none but ourselves can free up the mind
