thinning dreadlocks

a new lady started working here. she has dreadlocks too. naturally we bonded. her dreadlocks are thinning. what's the cause.

like they're big on the bottom (fat and helty) and near the root dem spindle out.

she's losing her hair. several women lose their hair similar to men who do.

i was wondering if is because she twists them. caz i don't twist my hair and it's fine.

she needs to cut them off and start over...

there is nothing she can do because her roots are thin

i've seen/heard that that the cause could be not starting your locs with the right size, stress, products people use...

I twist/palm roll mine and it has damaged my hair, of course i have a nappy head. Sometimes if you over twist that will put stress on the hair

Sue, does she have light or thick hair?

Speaking of which - Sassy, my real (natural) hair is about 6.5 inches long now. I took a couple of my twisties out today and measured it with a ruler. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] But if I start locks I am a little worried about thinning like Sue's friend. Because my hair is very light and thin [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

IMHO - it sounds like she is twisting the top and not compressing the bottom with palm rolling. The palm rolling helps to compress the locs and smooth them out

also - depending upon how long her hair is - she may be weighing it down from the roots - she may be able to clip the ends and even out the noticeablility of the chunks at the end

may be heriditary and baldness runs in her family

is she balding or just thinner at the roots?

i have also combined locs if they "spring" up on their own and get growing too thin

her length is just below ear level.
she has hard (in the olden days dem seh coarse) hair. and because her hair has that *grassy* texture, i told her she shouldn't be twisting it caz it breaks like that imo

the other way i know of doing the locks is to open up a space at the root and pull the lock through

did you ask her how she started them? the bottom may be loc extensions - if not a good ole palm rolling should compress and smooth out the bottom some

no i didn't, i just make mine clump up and then separate them but mine looks messy compared to hers [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

if you can imagine making 'Spinners', that's the motion. But it's done once.

It's easier when someone else is doing your hair.

I can only do palm rolling to certain parts of my head (more towards the front of my head). Otherwise, I twist my hair.

And I'm just talking about the new growth.
