Cutting it was the first mistake, the second mistake was that darn thread mess. I do my husband's dreads and no way are you suppose to do either one of those things. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70388-shameonyou.gif[/img]

I always tease him when he get's it done the first day he reminds me of a little baby chick. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] 5 hours is the same time I do his entire hair. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]

I'm sure he's not going to want to go back to a salon ever. How long is it? My husband's are almost touching his butt. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

((boopie)).. you are right.. hell never step in a salon ever again... his dreads were long.. down the middle of his back some of them.. it's been 6 years or so... not combing.. he's a natural kind of person.. i think the cutting was minimal.. just some loose hair.. not sure..

when i made the suggestions i read here.. and to go back to a salon next week.. he just didnt want to talk about it.. the idea of anyone in his hair.. goes against his grain..

ill let you all know what happens. hes away now.. im hoping hell take out the threads next week...at the roots

we do have a rasta friend from gambia with locks done to the back of his knees.. he says he has heard of tying to strenthen the roots.. because the weight of them is hard on roots..

I think JD had a good person...was she in NY or Boston [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]...sorry I can't remember. But Jdreaming comes around here often enough, or maybe you can e-mail her. Her hair looks fabulous now, and when I first met her when she still lived in Bean Town. If the person is in Boston, it might be worth the trip.

I know an excellent shop in Boston (Muriel's). They started mine. But, she trained in NYC (Khamit Kinks) so they should be among the best.

Now I go to an African lady from Tanzania at Hair Impressions in Miami. She uses the thread to sew up my hair when she puts it up in a style (it's sooo much more comfortable than all those pins). I just cut the thread when I take it down.

I like my locks well groomed. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img] Any good "natural" hair salon should be able to help him out.

Tell your son these experiences it may get him to laugh and see that he's not the only one that goes through this type of thing.

My husband came to the states in 94 he's from Kenya and has very thick hair. After the barber did a number to his head several times he decided to just let it grow and started twisting it into dreads in 95. He used to do it himself until it started to grown long. His mom and dad back in Kenya kept asking him to send them pictures back home of himself. He was scared to take any cause he knew his parents would flip their lids if they saw all of this hair.

For his birthday I treated him to get it done by this lady who did hair at home. It took her 5 hours, I sat there and watched her every move. I've been doing his hair ever since.

When I first started getting my hair braided I looked in the local paper where this lady was advertising that she did hair. I called her and made an appointment, she did hair on the side in her apartment. She was African and she had 3 kids running around doing all sorts of things.

She had to stop and give them a drink, she had to stop and make them lunch, she had to stop to stop them from fighting. DWL I told her how I wanted it done and she kept insisting that she was going to make it long down my back. " The heffa didn't tell me she didn't know how to do it any other way."

It took forever with all the distractions finally her husband came home and she hadn't cooked dinner. Well that didn't sit too well with him now I have them fussing in their language back and forth over the top of my head. The kids were running around with big handfuls of cookies, high on the sugar from the whole day of snacking. By the time she got done with all this hair I looked like the lion from the Wizard Of OZ.

I came home and my hisband was trying to convince me that it wasn't that bad. I convinced him to cut it maybe that what was wrong with it. Now it's looking crooked lol I just had to take the whole thing out, money gone down the drain.I saw her last year at the gas station and she comes running up to me asking if I remembered her. I didn't until she reminded me that she had done my hair at her house, I felt like drop kicking her right then and there.

I then found a nice salon that are run by Africans, they do a very nice job and one time I saw a picture of a hair style I just had to have. The hairstyle is from Cameroon they divide your hair like you see little girl"s hair then the bound it with string. They pull on the string and it makes these cute type of puffy braids.

Well it was hurting when she was doing it but I had no idea I had to go through this type of torture. The first time I noticed something wasn't right is when I went to cross the street Lord, my head hurt so bad and my hair was so tight I could barely move my head to see if I could cross the street.

Driving didn't help matters I kept think "I'll be in a accident but at least my hair will look cute." When I got home my husband told me I looked like a Black chinese doll baby cause my hair was so tight it made my eyes squinty.lol He tried to touch it and he almost got drop kicked cause it hurt soooooooo much. Then on top of that he was asking me "Why did you let them do it so tight?"

At night I had to sleep on my arm, my head was hurting so much in the middle of the night I woke my husband up and made him massage my scalp. 2 days later it finally got better and I went to vacation in Barbados. Everybody loved my hair and I mean all the women had to touch it and try to see just how it was done. Lord, the hairstyle was pretty but never again, thank God these women didn't touch it when it was first done I would have turned into The Hulk big time. Good lord, trying to get the thread out was a big headache too. My heart goes out to your son.

I know that this is a touchy subject but I hope all will be bbetter when he gets home.

i think he should cut the threads... thing here is that he is not making a style... he is rasta.. hasnt combed his hair in 6 years.. dreads formed on their own.. not made for him.... he just wanted it to look a bit neater in some places..

hope he takes it out... i think its too tight .. strings ridiculous .. will show him these comments....
