Do you find that most Blacks don't do the Thrift store for clothing shopping? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70402-thinking.gif[/img] I have never even heard of this until some of my employers told me that's where they shop mostly for the kids clothes shoes etc.

I was really shocked at another thing they also borrow each other's maternity clothes. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img] That's a little too personal for my taste. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70400-talktohand.gif[/img]

I knew that they shopped at the thrift store until the kids are usually in school. Knew that they swapped maternity wear (my sisters did it with all of their pregnancies).

They (yt people) tend to spend money on the big ticket things....(ie. homes, boats, ira's, etc).

in the course of full disclosure: ilp's observations are just that... <font color="black">HER</font> observations.

That's what my sister's did. A group of them got pregnant around the same time. All of them swap clothes.

Also a lot of pregnant military chicks do the same...maternity clothes and kids clothes

I'm white and I shop almost exclusively at thrift stores. I do wash everything before wearing it. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]

I see black women shopping in that store too so I guess it's not necessarily a black/white thing. I know white people that would never shop in one.

I hardly ever see men in there though, black or white.

I shop in Thrift Stores too. Have since I was a child. You can find some good deals there. I also find that white women, in particular, outnumber black women in the stores that I shop. I have heard a lot of black people say they would never shop in a second hand store. Especially if they wore hand me downs throughout their childhood. My family is large and my Mother could not afford to let pride or whatever keep her out when we were smaller. I never stopped going.

I get some nice clothes for Kimmy. I even got her a swinger, books and toys that were in mint condition. I don't shop for myself too often. It's usually futile, because I have large hips/butt and a narrow waist, so I have to get my clothes at certain stores. But I have found a couple of nice skirts from time to time. Oddly enough, my mom shopped in thrift stores for us too, we rarely had anything new and I grew so fast I always had pants that weren't long enough (oh the highwater jokes...). We had food stamps, yadda yadda....but if anything all that made me value thriftiness as an adult, not reject it.

I do remember in 6th grade really, really wanting Sasson jeans and Frye boots, and not getting them. But I lived [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

It's mainly for my kids that I shop there (and they aren't young - 12 and 9). Neither has mentioned any other kid at school making fun of their clothes and neither has asked for any particular type or brand of clothing yet.

I guess I just don't find clothing very important and hate to spend a lot of money on it. Travel for the family, sports/activities for the kids, a house in a great school district, fresh foods, fish...these are things that mean more to me than new clothes.

I also drive a 10 year old Toyota and have furniture that is mostly used.

I have never cared for spending a lot of money on clothes that I will either outgrow, wearout or get tired of. It is so not worth it. My shoes never cost over $20 bucks. For what? I just need something comfy for my feet.

I am one of those pay-all-the-bills-and-then-save-the-rest kind of person. Rainy days are coming. That trip to Jamaica is coming. The 17 year old Tonka Toy may need some new wheels. You know! Now, I do like new furniture. Even Moma bought new furniture. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

Back in the day, we got things that were in style after the fad passed. Then they were practicaly giving them away. The kids would laugh at us for that. I decided it's not worth having them if it's no longer in style. Like the Crayon shoes. We were laughed to scorn for that one. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70361-embarassed.gif[/img]

Ours is actually a consignment shop, people donate or bring in clothes and get 60% of whatever they sell for. When I want ot encourage my kids to organize their rooms I have them collect toys they no longer use and sell them there [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

...but one danger is that I live in a small town and my kids could, theoretically, show up to school in an outfit some other kid's mom donated or sold...so far so good on that, but then there is nothing to be ashamed of, I think.

We must be...I hate spending $ on shoes too. I did once splurge $100 on birkenstock sandals, because my mom had a pair for like 20 years. Sure enough I wore them almost every day in spring/summer/fall for about 6 years before they gave out. I haven't replaced them though...I have Airwalk crocs now for that kind of wearing now and they're only $15 [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

Oh man, you are bringing back memories....my mother asking why this wasn't "just as good" and I can't explain why it is so critically important that i have the exact brand and style that the other girls have....

I ran into my mom today and she and I talked about this. She is a mediator, counsels couples who are divorcing. One mom was saying her daughter needed X amount of money because we live in an area where it's important to "keep up" and her daughter needs to spend $100 every time she buys underwear at Victoria's Secret. Now for one - $100 on underwear for a teenager? For two - who the heck is going to see her underwear except boys she is sleeping with that I'm sure her mother doesn't want her to be sleeping with anyway!

One nice thing about thrift shop clothes is they are actually very good clothes and not worn...they are wearing good brands that last well, but I get them cheaper than the fall-apart clothes at places like Wal-Mart.

I love thrift stores....I shop Aldis for groceries, Savers for clothes and housewares &amp; the Dollar store for anything else....I figure if you can't get it at one of those places, you don't really need it.

BTW, my town is very multi-cultural &amp; I find all kinds of people at these stores.....but most of the blacks I see appear to be from foreign.

One of the parents I use to work for was so thrifty she would shop in a Thrift store in a minute. She was so cheap she would make her husband bring back his ziplock bags from his lunch and wash it instead of throwing them away. Paper towels she would use and re use them again and again.

Christmas time came and she gave me a box all nicely wrapped. When I got it home it was the ugliest fringed lime green sweater I have seen in my life. It smelled of moth balls and when I looked closely it had some kind of stains in it. I had a patient just like this!!! She used to eat lettuce that was turning brown because she did not want to waste it. She reused everything! I hated it. It was easy for me to throw things away because she was a paraplegic and could not see what I was doing. Her vision was limited because she could not turn around.

And this woman owned 9 apartments! She wanted to leave everything to her adopted son who hated her and never came to see or call her in the 6 months that I worked with her. She eventually died of breast cancer, refusing all treatments, and I guess Michael got everything.
