Memories of my grandmother...she recycled foil, she'd make "tv dinners" with her home cooking and recycled pie pans and other tins...she had a garden for almost all her vegetables, canned and froze fruits and vegetables for the winter, sewed the holes in her clothes and even her stockings.

She never bought anything new for herself.

...but when we came to visit it was a new outfit for all of us, a meal out at a restaurant, etc. She knew what she wanted to spend her limited income on.

I miss her.

My mother wouldn't even let us (my sisters and I) wear each others clothes muchless stranger [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]

She said if you only have 2 pairs of clothes you wear one alternately and wash the other one on the off day but NEVER < NEvER put awn sumaddy else cloze.

I guess that lesson sunk deep. Couldn;t do it with my friends in college - if someone "borrowed" somehting from me - I told them to keep it - could not fathom wearing it again.

Now I am teaching my daughter the same thing. We don;t share but we will give.

for those of you who would never share clothes...or wear second hand clothes....

just wondering how you feel about trying on clothes in the store....with the full knowledge that MANY other people may have tried on the same garment...WITHOUT the benefit of washing in between.

my parents had 5 kids...and you can be sure we wore each others clothes...we fought over each others clothes! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I past on my maternity clothes to my friend, who pass them down to her younger aunt. I don't buy clothes in thrift stores, but other stuff, yes. Also my baby got my friends baby clothes from her first pregancy and she got them back when she got pregnant again.

i have gone to the consignment stores for shopping for kids clothes -- the one near me has tons of clothes, many with the tags on. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]

I have given & received hand me downs from people that I know well.

Especially for the special occasion clothes.. How often does a child wear a suit? Not too often so dat one can buy in consignment shop and get a good dry cleaning.

When I was younger and starting out I had to attend a lot of black tie events (dated an older guy and had tons of these events to go to) so I used to go to the consignment shops in very wealthy areas for evening suits & dresses-- straight to the dry cleaners , then wear it, back to the dry cleaners and sell again at the consignment shop.

Except the time that my cousin snuck my raincoat and blouse that the fought her out of. I can't remember sharing any clothes either, the only reason she took mine was probably she didn't have anything clean to wear that day to school. In between trips, I have a personal buyer who will get me a few pieces of clothing and mi sure seh one time she bring back a pretty likkle dress that look juss like a ded woman dress.

Anyway, I have washed it and worn it but just get that vibe that this dress belonged to someone else.

Having said that - I see nothing wrong with people shopping Thrift Stores. And I certainly don't look differently at anyone who does or think any less of them.

For me - it's just a personal preference not to wear other peoples clothes if I don't need to. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

guys not all the clothes at thrift stores have to be worn. i go to the pound store and you'd be surprised the amount of GAP, old navy stuff gets recycled from the stores (tags intact) for their year end write offs.

best finds:

bianca nygaard two piece velvet outfit (top $90, skirt $175);

sunny choi two piece silk moire pants and dress, can wear together or separate ($575 original tag); [img]/forums/images/graemlins/bannana_purple.gif[/img]

the best time to go is after christmas when a lot of stores are doing their year-ends, the stuff you'll find [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70390-shhh.gif[/img]

I'm specifically refering to used clothing. Which - if I'm not mistaken - is the majority of the stock in a thrift type store.
