take the whole statement in, not just the part that strikes you.

i think we jamaicans have different images of our own people based on a combination of our own experiences and also, to a degree, popular media (dancehall culture, e.g.)

however, what i was struggling with in the commentary on the winning design was people's perceptions that the winning design did not say jamaica, and i wondered what kind of design would have said jamaica to them.

one person pointed out that the long sleeves was something that wouldnt be worn in jamaica's tropical climate, therefore the dress did not say jamaica to them. and all i could think was:

1. the design parameter was to design a dress inspired by the flag, not necessarily a dress to be worn in the country

2. jamaican women wear long sleeves a lot of times.

i cant help but think that they find the design perhaps too sophisticated, why they think it doesnt say jamaica.

I don't think so, Tanya. It was a very small statement that has no parts or sections to come close to pick apart.

My experience may be different but I'd never put it out there that, that is the way many people think of Jamaicans. I won't digress, but I will leave it alone.

the dress is striking (to be read: elegant and very sophisticated) and the comment that it doesn't &quot;say jamaica&quot; makes me think the same, &quot;then what does?&quot; And then I can only surmise that what says it for them is the eediat stereotypes that are out deh.

Mi feel sey some might tink it does not speak tuh Jamaica (depending pon wat dem was expecting an whe dem wahh guh inna it) not because a di &quot;sophistication&quot; per se, for mi nuh tink it dat sophisticated, but prolly cause a di following:

1. Di colla (sun too hot fi dat dey colla)
