Summer Gardens Pt. 2

Good Morning Gardenists! Since our thread has gone to delete heaven, it's been requested that I start another one. So here it is, Part 2. The summer's not over yet!!

I'll be MIA next week, (29th Aug-6 Sept.) but please continue the thread, I'll catch up when I return.

Our last thread took us through our planting and weeding, some reaping of early veggies, also, our beautiful flowers that we are so proud of. So now, let us continue.....

My marigolds are still blooming, seems there's no end to them. Everything else has bloomed and gone......the coleus, still thriving though. We've had some weird weather here in NY, I'm surprised that anything has survived the unbearable heat, coupled with the really bad rainstorms we've had.

I still have collards galore (what a hardy plant!)...callaloo is scanty, I'm bringing back seeds from yard, I'll try bring enuff to share with those of you that don't have seeds for next year.

String beans are finished, so are the turnip greens. I finally got tomatoes, after all this time, but bad news...we had a storm about 3 days ago, I mean it poured down raining, hard, and it mashed down most of the plants, so I doubt if I can save them, I do see a few tomatoes trying to survive. I don't know what happened but my pepper plants have withered away to nothing, I guess the combination of the severe heat and then the hard rain just killed them, there's always next year God willing.

The peppermint, spearmint, thyme and basil still doing very well, I reap at least weekly from them.

Well, let's hear it from my fellow gardenists, (Porty-48, BigTime, SandiF, Pepper, Grandma2 and others) how are your summer gardens doing?

Lawd Simmy thank God fi yu,cause mi was sooo disapointed obout the last one been deleted,mi wouldnt kno weh fi start.

Anyway see mi nuh have nuh garden till next year.mek mi tell unno bout mi flower pot dem,de pepper nuh bear yet mi nuh tink it a go bear dis year,but the herbs,oh my, basil,thyme,jasmin,all of them soo beautiful,an the more i use the the better. Oh and before i forget,one day i planted a purple onion,in a pot with the lavender,and i am telling you,i have use the top as escallion,and i believe i will soon have onions,you should see it.

Spearmint leaves are smaller than the peppermint leaves right?

Evening All,
Just came in from the garden...still reaping tomatoes Grandma2, Have your Jasmin flowered yet? I have two varieties one flowered in June the other flowers in September.

Dispite the fact that I don't water the garden it is very green. Do you across the water have to?

Hi Bigtime,lawd,you are haveing a better time over there than we are over here.everyone is complaining over here,really bad weather,supper hot then lots of rain, weird.

As for de Jasmine tanks for asking,i just have the potted ons that yu just use for tea,so no blooms,but went mi did live a Florida,mi did plant the blooming one outside the front door and in de back,a mek mi tell yu,it was a pleasure to welcome visitor,cause wen mi open de front door wow. yu know wah mi use to do,mi puter desk was under de window,at the front door,an even doh the A/C was on mi crack de window just fi smell them,lawd wat wanderful memories.tanks for asking.

as for watering them,they are very hardy,so they dont need a lot of water

grandma2, I think you misunerstand me, the question was do you water your garden? I don't except for the pots, but my garden is always green. Was out there today still more tomatoes to reap , herbs looking good,few weeds.We're in for a excellent bank holiday weekend weather wise. Time for a barbi!
Something I noticed, the Jasmin here does not smell like the ones at home!

mi sarry Bigtime,(de head tek wata) yes weh have to wata de garden all de time,somebady de tell mi say is because de water plate under de ground is so low,like in Florida it so high,mi nuh know how true dat is,but dats why weh have to water all de time.

mi glad yu garden doing good,re de jasmine,is the sun hat cause in Florida dem smell just like in JA,over here the smell is not as intense either.

Hi there simmy, chayil, grandma2 & Bigtime -- hope all your gardens (yes, even your potted garden grandma2) are continuing to grow even though we coming to the end of the summer (maybe not for you yet Bigtime)

In the original SG thread I had told you the trouble we had with the raccoon -- he/she never returned so things are continuing to grow nicely and we're still reaping chives, callaloo, mint and thyme -- now getting lots of tomatoes (hubby gonna bottle some later today), cucumbers, carrots, beans and beets -- green sweet peppers are ready but leaving some longer to ripen to red and yellow then will cut up and freeze for later use -- should start using the potatoes soon as well as the corn as they are now ready -- overall this has turned out to be a pretty good summer for the garden.

Porty48, Is hubby the assistant gardener? As I too am supervised and take solace from my herb/vegetable patch!
A question I asked on the lost thread...Does any one make there own compost? I do but then again I recycle paper & glass!

Bigtime -- hubby is the gardener -- it's his therapy from the stress of the work -- only he doesn't have as much time as he used to so I've been learning more than ever this year -- he does all the planting though as I wouldn't know the distance between rows/seeds etc. -- I'm there for the watering, weeding, reaping and cooking although the bottling of tomatoes etc. is his to do.

All the red peas were harvested yesterday and left outside to continue drying in the pods(?) -- know wel'll enjoy these in both rice & peas and soup

Hubby also looks after the composting, putting it in the container and spreading or burying it in the garden -- my stomach can't take that either. --

We also do recycling of newspaper, cans, bottles, etc. -- these are picked up once a week and have to be in their proper "blue box" or clear plastic bags -- if not they will be left, no ifs or buts

Mi hybrid hybiscus has bloomed (really huge flowers). These are supposed to last through the winter, but I planted one last year and it never survived. My rose bushes are doing poorly, I have no luck with roses. The cosmos are like weeds, they keep seeding themselves, but they're pretty. I have lemon tomatoes (yellow when ripe) and the regular type as well that are doing well. I have two giant sunflower patches that have bloomed as well. I dug up my whole front yard and it looks great. My neighbours always stop to complement me on the garden. I'm an accidental gardener and learning, I usually grab seeds in fall from other people's gardens and sprinkle them on the ground. Sometimes I don't know if I'm growing weeds or something nice/useful

Welcome swinishmaid -- jus noticed your post -- your garden sounds lovely -- I enjoy a wild flower garden that you can pick many types of flowers from -- hope you take pics to enjoy when the snow is around -- have had green tomatoes but yellow guess I'll have to get use to them too eh .

So summer is almost ended -- leaves beginning to fall so it's almost time to put the gardens to bed for another year -- we only got about 8 corns from what we planted as some animal was around and got off with about 4-6 -- they were OK but not very sweet -- those we bought were sweeter -- all the calaloos finished now, picked the last on Monday, really had to glean and pick the leaves only before hubby turned them over for compost -- only got 2 zucchinis this time and a few small cucumbers -- think the heat really stunted some of the veggies -- still enjoying the tomatoes and sweet peppers.

Hi fellow horticulturalists! Not a good week for gardening, my mind has been on other things. Still bringing in a bumper crop of tomatos (6 weeks and going strong) Bwoy dem sweet can dun!. Flowers still in bloom despite the fact that the tempreture has dropped to the 60's.. My project this week was to reposition the childrens's apparatus so as to make better use of the garden next year. Still mowing the lawn , but at the end of October will start preparing for next spring. Mi Gawn

Howdy Do Gardenists!!

I'm back home from a long trip and glad to be home to take care of my garden, which is looking great. The first thing I head to was my garden to see how the plants were doing.

The Gardenias, Geraniums, Hibiciscuses, Cherry Ice, Coleus, Begonias, Anthuriums and all other plants are looking wonderful! Another Hibiscus plant has started blooming at the time I left and has more flowers blooming out but I forgot to look at them today and the flowers are all closed up tonight.

The Chrysanthemums are not far from pushing out buds. I did not prune the 'mums and they're standing at 8" tall ... I hope they bloom.

I'm planning to re-design my gardening area for next spring and thinking of creating a rock garden. Anyone have a rock garden can give advice/share ideas??
