You sure it's squirrels? Any signs of groundhogs around? Squirrels, I know do not favour herbs, they're for nuts. I once had the problems of squirrels digging up my tulip bulbs. Groundhogs are more enticed by herbs...

They must have enjoyed my scallions, thyme, basil, etc... [/qb]

Cucumbers did very well (mi sick of cucumber)
Fever grass very well
The melons were small
Jalapenos did well and were very hot (my 2yr would pick & eat them)
Just saw a watermelon out there today will probably pick it tomorrow
Potatoes good- we ate it for 3 weeks.
Tomatoes ok.
The sunflowers were over 10 feet tall, bamboo grew like crazy and the mexican sunflowers are still booming.
We are very happy with our garden this year.

I am almost 100% positive it's squirrels. Plus, I have a few oak trees where I live so acorns are falling by the buckets.
I have even caught the pesky rascals red handed. They are not afraid of anything I put in the back yard to scare them. I come home from work and see my flower pots knocked over and all my herbs gone and the squirrels are sitting on the grass with their cheeks full chomping on my herbs (hanging out of their mouths).
Do they look you in the face and smile? I have seen one or 2 do that .. until we got the dog - no more squirrels in the back yard after that.
