As some of you may already know, last year, I traveled around South Africa. After the sad disappointment of seeing only two of the Big Five (my traveling buddy is a National Geographic and wild animal junkie) animals at Kruger Park, someone we met there recommended that we go to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya.

FACT: The Maasai Mara National Reserve is part of the vast Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem that stretches north and south across the border with Tanzania. The Maasai Mara itself is 1500 sq km, a small proportion of the total ecosystem.

The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem has one of the highest densities and diversities of mammalian wildlife anywhere in the world, surviving for thousands of years because its unique balance between wildlife and the environment has to-date been relatively uninterrupted by human expansion and development.

It's home to the Big Five-ELEPHANTS, RHINO, LEOPARD, LION and BUFFALO.

The Maasai Mara plays host to the Great Natural Migration every year from July to September.

It is home to Kenya's largest population of lions.

More than 300 species of birds are found in the Mara.

It has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa.

A dey suh mi started to save up mi money and get ready for mi trip to East Africa…The road less travelled…

Let the journey begin!

We went back and forth and forth and back about where we should go first, how long we should spend at each place and of course, the cost. Only after we agreed the route did the news stories break about the political unrest in the very areas we targeted, so we had to go back to the drawing table at the last minute. We even argued about whether we should postpone the trip until next year, because we had already missed the GREAT MIGRATION of the Wildebeest, (which takes place between July and August) that my animal junkie was visibly upset about, coupled with the anticipated "problems". READ BOUT DI MIGRATION YASSUH. It is supposed to be SPECTACULAR!

ETHIOPIA was our first stop!!! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/bannana_purple.gif[/img]

The only way to get there from here though (on the cheap) was to fly to Edinburg (Scotland), then down to London (to pick up mi sista). We left Heathrow at about 10:30 pm for an overnight flight to Nairobi (Kenya). The time difference was three hours ahead of London and eight hours ahead of NY.

We stopped over in Nairobi for about three hours (stayed in the airport) and then caught a flight to EHIOPIA...I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

Our experience on the plane to Kenya and then on to Ethiopia was FABULOUS. We chatted and laughed and made so many new friends on the flight, it was unreal. You could feel the pride and the welcoming spirit from the people the entire way.

The cosmopolitan makeup of Kenya was obvious on the plane. We had a ball. This is one of the ladies we met. She is from Uganda and was on her way to a conference in Ethiopia. She told us so much about her country and Africa in general. She absolutely loved the fact that we were coming from so far and wanted to know everything about us. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/bannana_purple.gif[/img] We exchange information and parted ways, promising to meet again.

Yes, coffee came from Ethiopia, but unfortunately, due to the unfair trade practices imposed by the western capitalistic animals, they are hardly benefiting from its "glory" at Starbucks and the other thousands of coffee houses across the world that make millions from it.
