A sweet and subtle gem of a movie. Newly orphaned Addie (Tatum O'Neal) falls into the care of small-time con artist Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal, Tatum's real-life father) and turns out to be better at grifting than he is. Set in Depression-era Kansas, Paper Moon is a miracle of unity. The set design and cinematography combine to give both the flavor of documentary photos and the visual quality of movies from the period, and every performance meshes with the overall tone of sincerity, earnest optimism, and creeping desperation. The rapport between Addie and Moses is phenomenal--and being father and daughter doesn't make that a sure thing. Ryan O'Neal gives a truly great performance (perhaps the only one of his career) and Tatum won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (she's the youngest winner in history). Madeline Kahn was also nominated for her wonderfully funny and sad turn as an exotic dancer named Trixie Delight. Paper Moon has a miraculous combination of outrageous sentimentality and pragmatic cynicism; the result is genuinely touching. One of director Peter Bogdanovich's best films, and kind of a comic companion piece to The Last Picture Show. --Bret Fetzer

haffi give props to mel gibson in the mad max movies. except escape from thunderdom <-- [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] jump the shark movie that [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

One of the best Australian movies from the '70s. The direction in this movie is startling to watch. Movie resembles a late '60s western (the coffin at the train station), a road movie (like Grand Theft Auto), Psycho (the music and those white lines on the roads), patrol cop pictures (e.g. Electra Glide In Blue) and a revenge movie. The best sequence was leading up to the death of Gibson's wife - truly impressive and uncomfortable to watch.

yeah, the original Mad Max! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img] my kids and i watched in couple years ago (correction, I made them watch it in my ongoing effort to movie-cally educate them [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img] ), and I was struck by how young Mel Gibson appeared in that movie, and also how amateurish the movie looked at the start.

but that scene with the killing of the wife - and Mad Max's rage - OMG you can just feel yourself getting that same surge of outright emotion, viewer and character just fusing into one, and the revenge becomes sooooo sweet... exceptional movie-making at that point.

Another favorite of the men in my life (one knows all the words, the other knows all the songs):

Paint Your Wagon - (1969)

A Michigan farmer and a prospector form a partnership in the California gold country. Their adventures include buying and sharing a wife, hijacking a stage, kidnaping six prostitutes, and turning their mining camp into a boomtown. Along the way there is plenty of drinking, gambling, and singing. They even find time to do some creative gold mining.

<font color="blue">side note: </font> I thought this was the only movie that featured Clint singing. Saw an interview not so long ago, where he said he sang in Play Misty For Me... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

Dark Victory (1939) is a sentimental, tragic and moving melodrama (a "weepie" or "woman's picture") from Warner Bros. studios - made in Hollywood's most famous and competitive year. The film contains an electrifying, compelling, tour de force, tear-jerking performance from its major star Bette Davis.
