Una...trust me, I have not given up on the struggle to assist in the fight...My frustration is evident - but I am still doing what I can.

Remember the picture several years about of a little girl with a vulture close by waiting for her to die. The photographer later committed suicide - and I can understand why he did. It just boggles the mind, the evil we humans are capable of - it makes Hitler's deed looks like a nun's in comparison.

I still do a lot with CARE International and WHO - and rest assured, Darfur is just the tip of the iceburg.

Zeko, I DO appreciate you posting again. Yes, your frustration is pretty apparent but VERY MUCH understood. It is really nice to know that you haven't given up.

Wow, I never saw the pic of the little girl and I'm SO glad I didn't...that would make me want to go somewhere and die too.

We need our best and brightest minds to come up with SOLUTIONS...and NOW!

Una...this is nothing in comparison to when my brothers and I try to discuss politics and world issues - that is not pretty - it requires thick skin and a sense of humor.

That is why forums like this are necessary... to discuss and appreciate our differences...and let our views known.

The picture taken by Kevin is not for the faint of heart - but seeing it - put into prospective the work that must be done and quickly.

Try and work up the nerve and take a look at the picture and read Kevin's bio - We "Consultants" who are tired, frustrated, angry - borderline suicidal uses it to get a handle on ourselves and the job ahead of us.

The photograph shows a starving Sudanese child being stalked by a vulture won Kevin Carter the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography.

My youngest brother goes to Africa about 3 times each year and we put together stuff to take the girls in the village he visits. (Dolls, sanitary stuff, dresses, underwears)

The really appreciate it...

Where can I find this pic? One thing about me, I get very upset and stressed when I see babies/children and animals in stress...one day I may be able to look at it...just thinking about it is making my eyes water. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

Yes, I agree with you about the usefulness of and need for forums like this.... Who knows, perhaps we can learn from them!

...so how might one, who is not well endowed financially, go to Africa for the purposes of helping others? I would like to do something like that...I think I'm too old for the Peace Corps...

Organization like CARE International usually ask for volunteers - Habitat for Humanity and AFRICARE, Some church groups and Oprah's African Programme.

If you get emotional easily, you may want to re-think going - it do take a toll on you - but it can be worth the experience and having to say - I have been there - besides - despite all the tragedy - Africa is a beautiful and awe-inspiring country. Nina why don't you check into some of the volunteer vacations? you could get a feel of things with out seeing the real hard core.

one of many organizations that offer volunteer vacations

africa is an awesome place fi true. but the reality may not hold up to your fantasy. large groups of african people survive on international aid. it is a business and a hustle on a massive scale. it is true that the continent has been exploited in many ways but africans are sharp and know how to work situations to their advantage. not to get too negative but i would not want to see a sensitive an compassionate person like yourself be taken advantage of.

incidentally you can join the peace corp at any age. just requires a 2 year commitment.
