it's all over st. bess, the red dirt. you find it near santa, it's farmed by my uncle in lovely point.

speaking of carrying water, i used to do that too. i'd tell them about drought, when the tank was dry, and you had to go to the nearest standpipe to get water in pans that you'd then carry home on your head. mi also used to tell dem bout when water truck give you water. the grandanty who raised me lived next to the main road and had political connections, so every once in a while a truck would pull up and fill up the tank with water. it did pretty and blue, esee!

next time mi go jamaica mi haffi get mi kids fi practice draw water from tank - ou know, fling di pan on the rope so it land on its side, then manoeuver it so it scoop up the water, then strain you backside try pull up a full can a water wid rope. you falleeetee if di rope pop - some a dem did so ole. what about scrubbing pot with sand? searching for firestick? picking this bush (lawd cyaan memba di name) fi sweep the yard?

Are you thinking of the ballad bush to sweep the house - these were cut early in the morning with the dew water still on them........ and the rosemary brush to sweep the yard. Yes people still live that way all over the island - 1 room with more applances than people have in farrin. Ah the tank with rain water - anyone remember washing clothes in rain water how it suds? and get the clothes extra clean. What about going to the 1-room basic school when you were 3 or 4 years old and your parents paying 1 shilling and 6 pence per week or paying the school fee with 1 doz eggs?

me neva like di red dirt when me go visit a baxide! your shoes always ended up red! One insect I noticed in St elizabeth that I hadn't seen before was the "duck-ant(s)". Do you know it?

Using the ash from the coal stove to wash the pots - no Ajax powder can beat that. We used to use the coconut bow(brow) to sweep the yard. From Kingston and a pioneer.

My Uncle Melvin who lives in Portland is a pioneer... a true bushman who goes off for days into the wooded areas in Portland to chop bush and gather fire wood (can't remember the name). When you see him, he'll be travelling for miles on foot with a big pile of stick on his head and his cutlass in hand. A living legend who has not adapted a modernistic way of life. Always a pleasure to visit him, as you'll sit in his one room house with the single kerosene lamp or candle shed a soft light in the dark room... listening to his stories of a time, which you or I have never experienced. Even though the family has built a modern house with indoor plumbing for him, he still lives in his little one room house.
