Mz. D... I always love constructive criticism. I am positively sure you know as a seemingly accomplished writer yourself, a writer is an artist..you should never copy another's brush strokes or technique. There was only one Da Vinci... This story will begin and end generic. I only unfortuantely have time to write at night, in an exhausted state and I do apologize to my readers for being so lax.

My favorite saying for almost a half centure is "DARE TO BE DIFFERENT". I however, would enjoy and hopefully look forward to reading this technique in one of your JA.com stories. What I said had nothing to do being different or being an artist. neither was there any attempt on my part to insult you. Just know that when we put some things out for admiration, we should also expect criticism, constructive or otherwise...

<font color="purple">Part V - Serenity’s Sensuality </font>

As the moon rose to illuminate the night’s sky, you could almost feel the mischief in their conversation. Where are you? Right behind you, his deep voice crackled through the phone. The sound of his voice alone made her skin tremble and almost always put her in a deep trance. Often, speaking to him was risky business while driving. She either kept it short or pulled over to the side of the road to finish the conversation. Beads of sweat almost always found themselves drizzling down her belly; the camel colored leather interior didn’t help. That man could ask “what’s for dinner?” and that did it for her. Thank God for who ever invented the convertible she often thought.

Seren looked through the rear view mirror of her burgundy 2007 Lexus Luxury Coupe and saw the perfect dark silhouette of his figure behind the wheel of his Indigo Jeep Commander. Are you following me Mr. Kamara? Definitely, Ms. Serenity, I’d follow you anywhere.

The lunar light looked beautiful among their palm lined street. The night air was comfortable this time of year, somewhere between fall and winter, though in Miami, the average temperature fluctuated between 73 and 78 degrees easily.

See you at home, Seren replied as she hit the garage door opener located on her dash. See you there honey, Tahir blew a virtual kiss into the phone and promptly hung it up. The automatic lights purred as soon as Seren’s foot hit the ground. She attempted to fish for her keys, while trying to manage retrieval of the mail. She felt his presence behind her, the hair on her neck stood on end. An electric ambiance followed him everywhere, he could cause a black out in her if he really tried.

A smile that went from her cocoa colored curled lips straight to her heart met him as he swung her around. Welcome home Mrs. Kamara, I missed you something awful today. The mail, her bag and keys let gravity take them as her arms raised to hold his neck. His height dwarfed hers and most times she needed to stand on her toes if the day’s heels weren’t high enough. He kissed her deeply; she could taste the mints he loved and savored all day. Forever mystified, she’d never known a man whose cologne smelled as if he just walked out of the shower and dressed at 7:00 pm. He smelled as good right now as he did when they kissed one another goodbye this morning. Married 10 years they still behaved as newly weds. There was, at times, urgency in their kiss, like they had been away from one another for years. I love this man, I love this man, is all that played in her mind as he grabbed her tighter, kissed her harder.

She broke away first, aware the neighbor had just pulled in next door. Seren was still ridiculously shy when it came to public displays of affection. She bent down to retrieve her things, keys in hand, he pressed hard against her as she tried to open the door. Well manicured nails traced her face as he pulled back her hair to kiss her neck. Hi Mr. Ackerman, she managed an uncomfortable wave. Tahir gave a half hearted smile to Bob Ackerman, and went back to his mission of caressing her neck with his lips. The lock tumblers finally giving way, the door opened wide from the weight of him pushing against her. Once inside she quickly kicked off her shoes, they slid unceremoniously across the waxed hardwood floor. His hand held hers tightly, attempting to bring her again close to him. Tahir, baby, let’s get in the house.

Seren tried reluctantly to exit the door and reclaim the rest of her items scattered just outside of the doorway. She giggled when Tahir would let her get so far and pull her right back. Tahir… come on now, let me go. With a wink, Serene puckered her lips and whispered, “I promise baby, I’ll make it worth your while.” With that said, he let her go.

She laughed all the way out the door, looking back at him standing in the entry hall. His dreds pulled back neatly, per corporate standard, Tahir wore dark suits and they personified his style well. He was tall, his skin like smooth dark African mahogany and his smile could stop Seren from angrily cussing him the rare times he made her upset. Tahir had a mystery that seemed to surround him and the darkness in his clothing only assisted you in making the assumption that there was something different about this man. His essence demanded respect and she was attracted to strength that radiated from him, inside and out.

Bending over to get her things she felt his strong arms around her waist, her nylon covered feet began to slide and lift off the floor. She grabbed her things; laughing uncontrollably, TAHIR! She stood straight up against his chest, her feet only reaching his knees. She put on her best acting audition ever, for the lead role in, “I want Tahir to Release Me Right Now!” The struggle was a sham and fruitless….she kicked the door closed, in what seemed like only seconds he maneuvered his arm under her legs and held her back so that her face met his. His dark brown eyes said everything he wanted and needed in that moment. His spirit met her soul as they traveled upstairs, her thigh high nylons found their way to the middle stair. It seems that a competition started as to whom could undo one another’s buttons the quickest, with skills evenly matched, no one kept score and no winner ever announced.

Skipping dinner wasn’t a rarity in this household, even without food, they always ate and were always full.

Good Morning Miami, Frank Consola’s rhythmic voice echoed on the radio. It’s a beautiful morning her at WDNA your serious Jazz morning station.

The steam from the shower seeped into their bedroom, through slanted eyes; she could see he’d fixed a small breakfast on the veranda. Ivory colored satin sheets seemed unceremoniously scattered, proof of the passion of last nights love session. Seren lifted her hands to her face, and inhaled deeply the aroma of their love together. He was all over her, she him and they one another. That old familiar stirring teased her pleasure areas. Especially those in between places hidden by flowered skin. Her body attempted to over power her mind into believing that it was mandatory for her to attend the one man rain storm going on in the bathroom. A quicky??? Yes!! Maybe she could convince him to stay, lay in bed with her until the afternoon passed away. Her legs, with minds of their own, effortlessly moved themselves to the side of the bed but her arms and back wouldn’t cooperate. Stop! She remembered ahhh that’s right; he has an important meeting with the CEO this morning to go over the budget requirements for next quarter. Disappointingly, her legs recoiled and she moved her body to the center of their bed... She could smell the fresh grapefruit, peaches and strawberries coming through the door. She saw the carafe held fresh squeezed orange juice. It flowed on the cool breeze of the morning and invited her to eat heartily. Hearing the shower stop, she grabbed her silk robe and met him at the door.

Good morning they said in unison… a familiar grin on their faces. He leaned in and she quickly moved back… I haven’t brushed my teeth yet! He laughed, Seren, we’ve been married ten years and you still won’t let me kiss you before you’ve brushed your teeth. It got on his nerves but he appreciated how she always cared about her appearance and hygiene. It took him 8 months into year one to stop her from changing the sheets immediately after they made love. One week he made up his mind to break her out of this habit. He tripled his daily supplements, gaining unimaginable energy. He made love to her all night, well into the morning, when she awoke that afternoon, he hit it again. That night if she moved, twitched or stirred, he was on, in and over her with a fierceness she’d never known before. He pushed her against the wall, rug burns ignited skin from the motion on the carpet, against their bedroom door and on the bathroom floor. Placing her on their dresser, she was so tired she did nothing but an half hearted word play…Stop, I’m so tired, why are you doing this? He almost cracked their dresser right down the middle; putting all he had in to making her surrender to sleep. Today you could still see the marks from where the mirror continuously and angrily hit the wall. Again, she slept through the entire next day.

He peeked in on her regularly. When she finally arose, he was sitting in the corner armchair with a satisfied look across his face. Seren didn’t even care or remember to change the sheets that day, or the next, heck, Tahir wound up changing the sheets the next week. Seren never ever argued with him again, even if the wet spot was on her side…she slept inside it without issue.

She walked out and saw that he had started breakfast without her; he waved her over as his nose dived into the morning paper. Through the sheer white curtain he looked like a dream… A dream… Serenity’s Dream… Just 12 years, 5 months ago she was ready to die knowing Tahji had gotten through to college. She never saw this happiness for herself. She remembered back to the day she’d met him…..

YOU GO BOY… Lace said with her distinctive booming voice, she hugged her adopted nephew. A Morehouse Man huh!! Atlanta isn’t even that far away. His grandmother hugged and patted his back; he was the first in their family to attend college. She had given Seren a hard time, having him so early but she had stuck it out and did a fine job with no man in sight.

In the excitement no one seemed to notice Seren had fallen asleep. Her bones ached and just this little bit of excitement had wore her out completely. The small chemo therapy treatment they’d given her before while she was admitted left her unable to spend long periods of time in a conscious state. They pulled the warm fleece throw they kept on the arm of the chair over her and moved their little party to another room. Serenity dreamed but not before a tear escaped her right eye unnoticed by no one but the universe. Mother Nature smiled upon her and wrapped her in love. She whispered, Serenity my child, your time is coming and it will be wonderful. Hold on girl. Hold on.

I’ve sent you a ticket!! Lace, what’s up girl, Serene was happy to hear from her friend. I said I’ve sent you a ticket! Get packed, hell don’t get packed but you and Treasure are coming to spend summer vacation with us at the villa. I emailed the ticket and confirmation to your yahoo account. Be ready and have your behind to the AJ gate at 8:30 am. We’ll be awaiting your arrival in Kingston.

Hello young one, the attendant smiled at Treasure. Hello, Treasure shyly spoke back, trying to get her chin to touch her neck. Would you both like something to drink? Treasure? Yes maam. What would you like? Oh, umm, giggle . She’ll have a sprite and I’ll have champagne, Seren smiled to the attendant. Orange Juice? No thank you. Serenity, didn’t care how touristy it was to order champagne, she did it each and every time. It was a champagne flight wasn’t it and she was drinking champagne!!

She would miss being with Tahji but he had spoken to his Auntie Lacy before she made the arrangements. Apparently he had a new girlfriend, besides he was working to get extra spending money before it was time for him to take off to Georgia for school. He wanted to spend as much time with the young lady as he could, so elected not to spend the summer in JA.

While recovering from her last Lupus episode, Seren started collecting her unemployment benefits when her severance ran out. She had a little help from social security due to her disability but longed to work something awful. She piddled around the house for five months, trying to find something to do besides watch soap opera’s, game shows and seeing Shaniquah Johnson on Maury for the fifth time, testing 10 more men to see who fathered her third child. It was so mindless. She didn’t take pause at the fact Shaniquah had the time to sleep with all these men, Seren couldn’t see the logic in why she would put her business out on the street like that. Just shamin’ the family , she thought to herself. However, this fact didn’t stop her from tuning in to Maury everyday like it was her religion.

Inhaling deeply was the first thing Seren did when she disembarked in JA. She could smell the ocean, wild flowers, trees, and the humidity in the air. It was intoxicating to her better than any rum punch she’d ever had. Treasure on her hip, she walked carefully down the stairs. Stilettos were never good for traveling but she couldn’t help it, there was something sexy about a shoe that could literally break your neck. She figured if you could manage a stiletto, everything about you was balanced. They were Lavender, open toe with a silver chain that wrapped from the clasp to the around the front of her ankle. A single strap over the joint of her toes held the shoe in place. She carried a huge suede Coach strapped bag, which held everything she needed in the air. A white linen gauze suit flowed from her body, like it was made for the sole purpose of catching the Jamaican breeze. Her kinky twist wrapped around her crown, adorned with silver/purple butterflies, her lobes accented by hung round hoop earrings that held different layers of topaz, amethyst and sapphire stones. Seren’s toe and finger nails, a radiant mother of pearl. She never bothered with artificial nails; due to taking the time to grow and maintain her own. Her first attempt at blending into society, because everyone else was doing it, she immediately needed to remove them. The excruciating pain in her nail beds that followed that evening was unbearable. It took her almost 6 months to repair the damage that was done from the filing and glue. There was one entry she remembered verbatim from her high school autograph book. A favorite teacher of hers wrote:

“Serenity, good luck in all you do. Remember, in order to rise above the crowd, you must first stick your neck out.”

It was only as an adult that she realized what he was trying to tell her. She walked into Sangster International, putting Treasure down, she was elated that she only needed to transfer and not enter MoBay at all. Trying to fight it, she still felt the sting of the last time she was here; she felt Damon’s presence all around her. Ghost of what was said and done haunting and filling her mind with angry, resentful thoughts. She had wondered why her friend decided to meet her in Kingston, maybe she tried to save her from this turmoil.

Everyone turned around to hear where the deafening screech was coming from. Lace ran up to her, almost knocking her over. Hey Lace, she greeted her friend. Look at You! My you look wonderful, color back in your cheeks and all. Hi Aunnie, Treasure couldn’t pronounce her T, we flew… up there, she pointed to the sky. You sure did, baby girl! Do you like the hair? Lace asked Seren. Ahhh, I know, flaming red, tossing her head from side to side. I got tired of the blond thing, too South Beach. And what, Red Kool Aide colored hair is Jamaican? They both laughed like two school girls. Lionel hates it, but as usual hasn’t said a word, just shook his head.

Lace and Lionel had their ups and downs when first getting together. She lived in South Beach and met him of course while on vacation with her girlfriends. Lionel never wanted to immigrate; he was happy just where he was. Lace didn’t want to live in Jamaica and give up a life of promise, privilege and prestige. Of course her family had a fit when she announced that she was in love and started traveling to Jamaica staying weeks at a time. It wasn’t only the interracial thing they had a problem with; they didn’t understand how she could give up the life they worked to offer her to live in a third world country. Lacy was their only child and they did everything to deter her from leaving and living in Jamaica.

He cheated on her, she cheated on him, they fought, they argued but in the end, they both gave in. Lionel said it wasn’t Jamaica without her and Lace gave into her heart and married her Rasta Mon. The only man she could truly say she ever loved. Seren always believed that Lionel, who was not known for giving in and being painfully stubborn, finally cracked when Lace stopped calling and visiting. Lace wouldn’t take his calls and remained committed to shunning him an entire year, Seren didn’t know how she did it. She and Damon would fight and all she needed to do was hear his voice and she forgave him any thing.

Lionel sat as statuesque as always behind the wheel of their car. His hats seemed to get bigger and bigger every time she visited. How are you Lionel? Serenity, are you fine? Yes Lionel, thank you. Everything good with you? Yeah mon, of course. Still a man of many words huh Lionel? There it was that signature smile that told Seren she was home. Lionel is preparing your favorite, Steam King Fish, Cho cho and Papaya. He’s even roasted the breadfruit ripe from the yard. Saliva instinctively filled Seren’s mouth.


Two stories high, the villa was located just outside Port Maria. Ackee trees, the fruit not quite ripened showed off their beautiful color to the envious bread fruit and banana trees whose fruits were ripe but not quite as bright. Lush forest, grass as thick as the finest carpet met your sight when you turned up the drive. Painted white rocks of similar size but different shapes lined the entire garden and only small slabs of rock led the way to the stairs as not to muddy your shoes when the rainy season commenced.

Lionel grabbed the suitcases and started towards the door. Treasure without fear, headed immediately to play with the puppies that ran to meet their masters. Ginger and Dumpling jumped and clawed as if there was hidden meat underneath their clothing. Oh Lace, the place is beautiful. You guys have done a lot of work since the last time we were here. Hey! Thank God for the trust fund huh, she winked. No, just kidding, mom and dad have been great. Actually they’ve visited. Can’t say that they left ecstatic but they do see this is a real loving union and they were cordial. Girl, let’s get inside quickly; I can smell the rain about to fall.

Reaching the second landing, a figure stood in the doorway. Finally, a brother is starving the stranger said. Is this the Mz. Serenity I’ve heard so much about? I DIDN’T KNOW HE WAS COMING. When was the last time Lionel asked or shared important information with me? You know family; sometimes they don’t write or call, they just drop in.
