Yeah, once Arabs find out your name. My ex-husband (a descendant of slaves) looks like he could be Jamaican or whatever. He went to a halal butcher shop and asked for merguez and other meats. One butcher came out of the cold storage room and said to the other butcher in Arabic, "What does this ni99er want?" When my ex spoke up in Arabic, they were falling over themselves with apologies and gave him an extra pound of meat.

Some things overlap. Stigmatization is the same all over. This skin colour concept was an issue in Africa, before the appearance of the white man (there were Arabs) as it was in India, so in a sense we all end up having the same view of the skin and or hair.

You ever realize that Africans are tribalists and not even nationalist and further from being continentalists? You identity of African is an imposition on any black outside and within Africa, this is not an African concept, it is the same as Americans being forced to be patriots of America.

Guess what? Some aspects of Arab culture were learned from people who lived in what is now Mali, Niger, Senegal, et.al. "Maroquinerie" the French word for leather goods is derived from Maroc (Morocco) but the skill of tanning was brought to N. Africa from Senegal. Horsemanship and quite possibly certain scientific practices also came from sub-Saharan Africa. It is believed that the largest repository of pre-medieval (or medieval) writings using Arabic script are in Niger.

It is true that many black Africans converted to Islam (and Christianity BTW) to avoid being enslaved. Then in turn the convertees enslaved their animist neighbors. Along those lines, there was a prince who was mistakenly sent to the Americas as a slave where he laboured for many years. He eventually returned to Africa and became...a slave trader. I forgot his name, but will give the reference later.

In any case, I think it is misleading to portray the black Africans' role in exchanges with Arabs as a passive or unequal one. Maybe it is *today* but there seems to be little basis for this in history.

right, i dont want to go off too much from the topic, but it seems unlikely that arabs would bring the horses from asia to africa to be then taught by that africans true horsemanship.

Mossi horsemen sent from Ghana were usually depicted in Arab style clothing. Furthermore, this group is said to be a fusion of the Dagomba and the Mande.
The Mande is said to be the founder of the Ghana and the Mali empires and embaced Arab religion about 1000. Embracing Arab religion also is accompanied by intermarriage.
I do agree with you that it is not always a clear cut African vs Arab issue no matter where you look.
