Why do so many foreigners wear dreadlocks? Can someone please explain this to me. It doesn't seem right to me. What do they feel that they get out of it.

Re: Why do foreigners wear dreads?
poss88, let me give it a try to answer ur question...i would equate the wearing of the locks in the US today, to the afro of the 60s and 70s...to some it is a statement of pride, to others a statement of defiance....few know of the background of the locks with the rastafarian movement in Jamaica...while the look has been around for as long as people didn't comb through their hair, separating the strands, the rastas in Jamaica and the reggae musicians who wore it could be perceived as the ones who brought the look to a whole new set of converts....it is gratifying to see that something which once was held (and some would say, continues to be)in such disdain and derision in Jamaica, is now worldwide...people who wear it here may not know of the Nazarite Vow, the analogy to the mane of the lion etc. but i for one smile each time i see someone here with it...i know they don't wear it with the spirit of the Rastaman, but i smile because it atones in some way for every rasta in jamaica who was beaten and shaved by the police and who was mocked and derided as a blackheart man...

Re: Why do foreigners wear dreads?
Where in the world has there been dreadlocks before Jamaica? I never heard of any such place. As far as I have ever known, this is a rastafarian thing. I welcome anyone to prove me wrong. It started with those early rastas in the 1920's and 1930's. I would like to see pictures or some other proof to the contrary. Bring on the proof. As for foreigners wearing dreads, I find it totally ridiculous. It would be like me wearing a Sikhs turban or a Buddist Monk outfit. It doesn't fit. I think the Americans should stick to stocking caps and cowboy hats.

...as a Black American who has taken the time to research the background surrounding this whole issue before committing myself to wearing my hair this way(7 years now), I take GREAT offense to your statement.... Originally posted by JAIndian06:

Re: Why do foreigners wear dreads?
The initial question posed by this thread and this comment are both offensive. If you asked those non-Jamaicans/non-Rastafarians why they may choose to wear dreads that would be fine.. but it seems there is an intent to slam people for choices when in fact it is you that is uneducated.. you don't know or havnn't spoken to the people wearing them and yet you are offended by them.. maybe you need to get a life and stop worrying about why people choose to do what they do.. and what the heck does this have anything to do with being American?Originally posted by JAIndian06:

People choose to take things from other cultures and religions for a multitude of reasons; religious, philosophical and yes, style. Have you ever heard of cultural diffusion?? Hey I wear henna on my hands and ankles sometimes.. I am not Indian..I even use chopsticks sometimes to eat certain dishes(even some that are not chinese)
I can tell you for my white 16 year old son.. his hair is not quite dreadlocks yet... but he has stopped combing his hair and has been growing it for 6 months. He has evolved with Rasta philosophy (though he does not like it defined for him) over a two year period minimum.. its been slow changes to lifestyle , and thinking.. Yes his hair is a piece of this..so for him it sure isn't style (cause boy does it need to be combed through).. it's about a conviction.. for you to indict someone based on superficial objections is outrageous.. you really need to be a bit more compassionate and a little less cynical.

Re: Why do foreigners wear dreads?
oh no, let's not make this a color or religious issue b/c that is exactly where it is going.....I feel you BND1999 and I agree with a lot of what you wrote. Times have changed and will continue to change....it is either you except it or become a menace to society. I was just shocked to see a question like that asked in these times.....
We are in the 21st century, right?? Correct me if I'm wrong.....
