Their vociferous objection and condemnation of gambling and the introduction of casinos is a bit hollow. The clubs catering to Jamaicans hold their "freaky nights" of public copulation and fornication - what is next?

What is the governments and the Christian community's responsiblity as Jamaica fast becomes one of the sleaziest party places in the Caaribbean? Is the bad economy, and the lack of money the root of all this evil? Is it already too late?

Is is already too late I am not sure but then the apathy among most Jamaicans in this subtext is amazing for few have done anything to show their disgust of these events or are our people numb by the fast paced with which these evils are impacting their community.

I am not sure if the community got a chance to respond to the Casino gaming brewha before we already are hearing that the Government has authorized leagal gambling.

Its one of people being robbed, raped, exploied, while trying to survive the various punches.

Mango Jamaica is under attack, it has been so for awhile and although we have such a toll of death we have not as a people made our voices heard against evil consistently.

The media has not helped either for they fail to give coverage of an event from the masses perspective its always the special interests who get the coverage.

January first is usually the night when you can use to judge our press, for even as most Jamaicans go to watch night service in far larger numbers than most places in teh world, or press is always at teh balls, fetes, and miniscule parades.

That slant is continued always in favour of those who can pay to be seen and heard. Its dangerous because its stealing any enlightenment that could be gauged toward a consensus in protecting the community from social ills that are destoying civility.

A very sad state of affairs. We have sold out and prostituted ourselves and abandoned our traditional values in exchange for the almighty Yankee dollar. We have forgotten our history....earthquakes in Port Royal, Gilbert and more. God has blessed us mightily. We are turning our beautiful island paradise into Sodom and Gomorrah. How long will God continue to be patient with us?

Well firstly the christian community has no responsiblity- the church should NEVER be allowed to get involved with politics EVER!

Personally I think although, mass nude wddings nude beauty contests etc are harmless in itself I think they fuel (indirectly) the tourist sex trade which is pushing the rate of hiv infection very high in tourist areas.

something has to be done about it. jamaica is too beautiful and has too many natural resources and gifts to be down graded to just a place to go for sex. the thing is, it has been going on for such a long, long time that i wonder why these issues are still open for debate. my mother still tells the stories of her trip to jamaica 32 years ago. i remember as a young lady hearing my mother talk about how her travel partners acted on this trip. sleazy. how she felt insulted because they assumed that she was "down with it" and went so far as to pick out a "date" for her. how women with husbands and "a house full of children" were contemplating the idea of staying in jamaica because they were so in love. i learned from those stories. i have been travelling to the caribbean for 10 years and never have i went in search for anything but blue water, palm trees, good food, sun and sand. so, what ever it is that is going on with the sex tourism industry, both parties are guilty and something should be done about it. each individual must change their behavior in order for it to end.

I think marketing wasn't the right word what I mean is that the goings on at hedonism and the gigalo's/prostitutes of the tourist towns are well known. Also if you add the slack lyrics of a lot dancheall, it can give the overall impression to some, of an island where anything goes

Though saying that there are many who don't have that view of Jamaica, and see it as family or romantic holiday for two destination and these people make up the bulk of vistors to the island.

Personally I think the gigolos and prostitutes are one of the most annoying aspects of a Jamaican vacation...it's a pain in the butt to have to explain 5x on a Negril beach walk that I'm not there for that.

That image certainly keeps some people away.

Hedo and nude weddings and whatnot though, I put in a separate category...if you don't stay at Hedo you'll never see any of that, they stay in their little zoo for the most part and only come out dressed [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

but doesn't that suggest that there is a significant number of people who do go there for that reason?

I personally find the goings on at hedo unoffensive, but I feel once you allow, one aspect of tourism to be marketed on mainly sexual grounds it opens it up other types of "sex" tourism, it makes it seem like "its okay" to have a tourist product that is purely sexually driven, a bit like the idea that canabis is the gateway to harder drugs.

actualy the 1st time I was in Negril I went out on a boat to snorkel. as we approached another boat the captain said "that is the hedonism boat, you may see naked people" We did [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] . It was mostly old men and a flat chested sunburned woman. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] . [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]
The 2nd time I was there I went for a ride on a jetski. I saw an old man in a sail boat (from hedo) wearing only a life jacket.

I can empathise with that nyer as I have also been on the receiving end of the attention of working girls.

however,with regards to the other stuff,the sleaze and sex being offered in hotels and marketed worldwide as available in jamaica.
jamaica needs the revenue,and yes, it has prostituted itself in the pursuit of such.
but let us not be hypocritical here and also remember that jamaica is a highly liberated sexual society,our music,our walk,our language,our dance,all suggests SEX.
I have been in a typical go-go club and has seen the kinds of activities that takes place in those joints,and some of it involves cigarettes
empty bottles,and other paraphernalia to enhance the "performances".
I am of the opinion that if adults wish to partake in the kind of activities that are prevalent in these hotels then that is their rights.
as long as their sexual activities does not involve children or frighten the horses then live and let live.

far worse things are happening in jamaica that needs scrutiny,our island may have the record for having the most churches in the world per square mile but it has not yet turned into a puritanical society.

Very true
but how do we get individuals to change their behaviour, when they see it as an easy way to make money?

Sunshinechic, where else have you been in the caribbean? And does the same thing happen on other islands? Maybe we are exaggerating this, but I don't know what goes on in other islands.

Jamaica has wide exposure in the US media as an "anything goes" place. Case in point, the nude weddings received much coverage in the newspapers and in the tabloids (Globe magazine had photos of the "happy couples"). The purpose of the nude weddings and "beauty" contests is to fill the hotel rooms and Issa's pocket$$.

Meanwhile, on HBO on Thursday night 11 p.m. Eastern, one segment was devoted to the nude "beauty" contests. So people watching and reading would get the impression that Jamaica is the place to go for a promiscuous "no holds barred" holiday.
