Religious Neo-Slavery and Jamaica

In fact not only does Jamaica seems to be suffering from Religious Neo-Slavery , of which the chief proponents are the Rastafarian and the Christian derivatives of the Judeo-Christian Hypocrisy, in its decent into Hatianization and hopelessness, the Inelligensia so much a fixture of the progressive 70`s have grown cold, silent and now seems to be in the vanguard of oppression.

After the so called retreat last weekend, the only thing that seemed to have excited the Christians and some Rastafarians (at least the few voices that have taken the time to voice any opinion on a talk show) is the confession by the Government, that Casino Gambling will be considered as the new fix to our ailing economy.

This has prompted various members of the clergy, who one had thought, had safely retired to their leather easy chairs and air conditioned Benzes to dust off old tired news releases and to sprut forth about the evils of Casino Gambling. Sadly is was lost on them that Jamaica is a crime invested game of chance for most people who are not ministers of Government, Clery or can afford a small security detail. They seemed not to have noticed that Gambling and Begging (all forms including petty prostitution, as well as the usual Governemental variety) have become the new growth industry.

The church have clearly abdicated the duty they have set themselves, that is to be the moral center of Jamaica. If there is not yet, surely the religiuos leaders in Jamaica should now see themselves in a crise de conscience, that is of course if they ever really believed in morality, or was just merely concerned with picking the pocket of of the believers to line their million dollar suits with silk and satin.

My advice to the Church is to continue to hold your prayer breakfasts. Rastamen continue to wish for the Mother Land, leave Jamaicans alone to arrest Jamaica`s slide into poverty and depravity....One Love

have you ever been to Atlantic City? A lot of promises were made that the casinos would cause a huge influx of cash, reduce crime and raise the standard of living. They did have a huge influx of cash...right into the coffers of the owners. Their standard of living did go up...as owners. Every other area just within sight of the casinos is deplorable. I was there once and attended a sales pitch for a time share. The salesperson asked what I thought as we rose higher in an outside glass elevator that gave a good view of the city. My reply? "Look at the place, it's a slum." Good luck.

My post was not an advertising for or on behalf of Casinos.
All of what you have pointed out in already befallen Jamaica. I don`t know if you ever visited Jamaica, when we had a low crime rate, public transport system that was varied and worked, and all towns except for some parts of Kingston clean and livable.

The church fattened themselves then, and watched an even supported and made excuses for crooked politicians and morally bankrupt policies.

In the time since then we have had more churches, more religious derivatives, and a deeper desent into moral, economic and social decay. The only cry from the church is no abortions, no condoms, and no casinos, not even dialogue or frank discussions on the issues.

I can hardly see what worse or even good Casinos will do, all I am saying is that since the church oppose, oppose and oppose everything of a Socio-political nature in Jamaica, then keeping parying, and leave Thinking Jamaicans to sort our problems out....

very true. one would have thought that they would be more helpful and would want to discuss and give some alternatives rather than just say no i guess they feel as long you go to church everything will be alright. While the country deteriate before their eyes. The church has nuff mouth but not a lick of action.

Some churches used to hold their little bingos and 'fun casinos'. Legalized gambling finished that off. Charity casinos have taken a severe beating.

But...gambling is evil. Period. Atlantic city is one of the ugliest places I have ever visited. It sure doesn't resemble my old Monopoly game...or the visions of the place that I conjured up as a child.

Jamaica is rapidly becoming one of the ugliest places on earth with or with regulated Casions. Even if you do not licence a single casino there are more unregulated slot machines than than ever before.

Isn`t it a sign with so much more unregulated and regulated gambling over the despite the stated policy or non-policy of Government, that said government has lost its moral and physical ability to lead and what is happening now is almost laissez-faire, with the rich, powerful, and the church dictating the terms as they see fit?

The only opposition the church can muster is to casino gambling.
Did I hear the church speak out on, the extra-judicial killings?
On moral decay of Government?
Why didn`t the church stand up with Amnesty International?
Now since there little Gambling and collections are in danger they think it is time to rev up the ole propaganda machine and go into action action.

The church in Jamaica is very regressive, their policy is to turn a blind eye to corruption, engage in corruption themselves, exhort their members to avoid politics and not to take an active role in the running of the Country, because their salvation lies in reaching the otherside.

Well it is likely that every church member, church goer, dread, or person in Jamaica that is not among the thousands killed by crime, accident and disease will live to roughly 70 years. That is a long wait to see the pie-man, in the sky.

what is stopping these rasta men from going "back" to Africa, they can find a visa to go to America but not Africa?

Haiti used to be a beautiful and progressive Caribbean Island with a definable middle class. The long rule of a cruel despotic rulers has decimated the middle class and the intelligensia, leaving only the rich or poor people. The same has created socia-political stagnation. The same has also fostered the climate for envrionmental disaster and migration on a massive scale.

Jamaica is merrily on its way to such a prospect. Haiti is our closest example of what can befall a country that in governed in that manner.

Only religion and despots thrive in the dark ages.

Jamaica is a beautiful country with beautiful people. I was surprised to hear that churches are corrupt and even met a former pastor who, I later learned, resigned rather than give the gifts of the members as kickbacks. I was also surprised to learn that virtually nobody had any faith in the government. I asked a 21 year old why he did not get involved. I asked after hearing what he said upon seeing a political leaflet lying about last fall after a rally in Harmons.

While not highly educated he had a good heart but simply said "not me". I found it very interesting that a candidate would travel to remote areas to try to get the vote. What is the possibility of a down to earth person with a real heart for Jamaica to ever get elected?

I truly do not believe that gambling will be the answer. I just read where more and more states in the US are depending upon gambling in one form or the other to meet shortfalls but wouldn't it simply be shifting assets from one area of life to another? In order to draw foreigners to Jamaica (and their money) there will have to be other aspects that bring people into the country. Has there been a plan yet on how to do that? In doing that wouldn't that also draw people in that would go for the beauty, the service, the people, etc.? I was amazed to go to a black sand beach only to find it abandoned. There are so many treasures that are not being used even though so much potential exists.
