yuh mean ah really kerosene oil did in dose pats, barosa! boy dem musbe really clean dem well ...musbe all soak it fi days fi get rid ah di kerosene smell/taste.

di funny ting bout dose kerosene tin pat is they were so thin and di food never burn pon di coal stove and yuh couldn't turn down di flames..dere was no HI/MED/LOW yet di food never burn...ahh sah..mi love mi ppl dem bad!

A/G, dose "karosene tins" as people used to call dem was not as thin as they looked! Its because the tin dem was so big, dem look thin. dat is why dem didn't burn de food. Washing dem out was no big deal. After 3 or 4 bwiling of wata and scowaring with ashes and wash down wid brown soap, the pat was reddy for sarvice. BTW, High Med & Low was what yu use to get when de fire was strong, burning out, and dwindling down ...before it went out.

Yes the name of the tree is sycamore, and the reason that they say it bleeds is that it is the wood that they used to make the cross on which Jesus was crucified. That is the legend.

We used to cut it on Good Friday, between 12 noon and 3pm. That is the time that they say Jesus was on the cross. That was the only time of the year that this tree bleeds natural blood.

Year after year we cut it and there was no blood, only a pinkish, stainy sap oozed out of the bark with had no resemblance of blood. We cut it other times of the year and that is the same colour of the sap.

Later, man go outa road and hear people a talk bout how dem chop de tree on Good Friday and dem si Geesas blood. These were some of the same people that were present when the tree was chopped and dem si de same ting wa mi si.

De ongle miracle about dat tree and the shedding of Jesus' blood is how it survived with the amount a chops dat dem give it, year after year. but only an arborist can ansa dat.

Hey Ms. Brit, add me to one of the few Kingstonians on Jamaicans.com though born in St. Ann, was brought up most in Kingston/ St. Andrew, but has remained a proud St Annian and those summer holliday skirmishes to country as AG experienced live long and lasting in memory.
The bleeding tree?
Did we not do it to get the glue that some trees ooze? Or was it latex for rubber?
The Good Friday bleed I was not familuar with since is only summer mi did guh to country.

Me come from country to, Me memba when me mada use to use red dye polish and coconat brush fe clean and shine har floor me say you coud a see you face in a hit. Also, me use to go a river with me mada and a wash lady to wash clothes. The time when me mada never have no fridge and you buy ice, in a 98 degree summer it melt so fass. Me a tell you. Me give thanks to me parents for the strugle them go thru with so much love in dem hearts fe we pickney so we couda survive. Me know me a come from far. We are survivors.Yes!

yes, mi memba nuff duppy stories in st mary. Mi run go anda bed wholeap a' time mi so fraid.

one ting bout di lack of electricity is, mi use to rush fi do tings ina di evening. If mi granny sen mi fi go buy flowa an suga in a di evening time, mi a RUN! Nite time nah ketch mi ina di dawk! It did even worst when mi did a fi go dig up coco, and yam a gully. When it get dawk ina gully nat even di peeny dem visible.

sumady always have story afta sumady ded to. Sumady always talk bout seeing di duppy of a recently dead person ina dem room or a' stan up a dem door a look pan dem. Dem deh story use to mek mi head swell wid fright.
