Re: 700 Wives
it seems like nobody has yet addressed what you see as a ambiguous scriptures.
The history of Solomon:
Solomon was annointed and acclaimed king of Israel in 1037BC. In the fourth year of his reign, in the second month of the year (Ziv)[april/may] solomon began to build a temple to GOD. During the 13 years after completing the temple, solomon went on to build palaces and government buildings. he then went on a nationwide building programme.
where did all this money come from? solomon engaged extensively in trade. He imported gold, precious stones, algum timbers (1ki 9:26-28, 10:11). Additionally "all the kings of the earth" brought yearly gifts from their lands (1Ki 10:24,25).
Now as long as he remained firm in true worship, GOD blessed solomon with wisdom, glory and riches.. However, solomon deviated from the law that forbid marriage with foreign wives. his heart was inclined towards women from Moabite, Hittite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian and the daughter of Pharaoh. These wives turned him away from worshipping the GOD of Israel and instead he followed other gods. He did indeed take for himself 700 wives and , princess, and 300 concubines. Solomon was also violating a clear commandment that the king should also not multiply wives for himself, that his heart may not be turned aside (Deut 17:17). Because solomon turned away from GOD, or possibly practiced inter-faith, GOD informed him as a consequence He would rip part of the kingdom away from him, but not in solomon's day, but in the days of solomon's son (1Ki 11:9-13).
Now there is nothing at this point to suggest the Israelites did not use modern maths. They calculated the days of the year, months, seasons, they measured grain, flour, counted cattle, and solomon had built elaborate palaces, which must have taken complicated design involving numbers. remember they had lived under slavery with the egyptians who were masters in designing and building the pyramids, so the use of numbers would not be alien to them.
the comparison with the scripture in Timothy where the instruction is that men must only have one wife as opposed to the practice of polygamy. GOD is not the originator of polygamy. He gave ADam just one wife. Later Lamech, a descendant of cain, took two wives for himself. in time others imitated him, some went on to take slave girls as concubines. GOD tolerated the practice and under the Mosaic Law instituted measures to assure proper treatment of women who had such a relationship. He did this until the Christian congregation was established, but then he required that his servants return to the standard He Himself instituted in the garden of eden.

hope this goes someway in answer to your question
