Honest now, I do read those trip reports and the people and their various experiences. I don't think we should censor the reports, even the sexual parts because if that's what the person experienced then that's their reality. It also gives me a sense of what is happening in the country.

That said, if one read the politrix section one would think that Jamaica is strictly about, murder, abduction of rape of children, police brutality, etc. These things happen. People discuss them.

I think avenues of communication should be left open.

Now, I see also the people who tend to embrace the more sordid side of things, you can't change them - that's just who they are.

Remember, it takes all kinds.

Posting a review on a hotel or resort is an entirely different subject than posting about one's sexual history in another country. I think that should be prohibited

I have been to Jamaica only twice - both times positive experiences. I do not claim to be an expert on it. I enjoy the people, food, music & culture. Have made friends there. I was treated well there. I did not go there looking for "action" or "drugs" and am intelligent enough to know that good & bad exist everywhere. I am on vacation and just want to relax - that is it. I am not interested in any nonsense.

I can only guess that there are people out there who have **other issues** at hand or perhaps too much free time on their hands, so they enjoy igniting sparks by coming on here and constantly posting crap about their experiences with drugs, hookers, gigolo's, what their husband did or didn't do while in Jamaica. Who cares? Personally I can't understand why someone would want to reveal extremely personal stuff like that on a public site.

I could be wrong but I think people mean the one(s) that constantly make snide remarks or constantly inject negative remarks about Jamaica in most/all of their posts/threads...

I've begun reading this thread and I have to read the latest posts in the ones in the tourist forums. However, I just wanted to pop in at this point and say a couple things:

1. by and large the people who become members of the board, including many in the tourist forums, have an appreciation for Jamaica and have experience with the country. that includes members who are baan-a-yaads and visitors.

so if somebody says something because of what either a family member or a Jamaican friend has told them, let's give them the benefit of the doubt - okay? if their information is wrong, let us correct it and educate them without animosity.

2. i sense that there is a feeling in these discussions that if you're born in jamaica, what you say is automatically true versus what a foreigner says. well, it ain't necessarily so. it's not where you're born that qualifies you as an authority, IMO, but your direct experience and your studied knowledge. for example, there is much that I, a foreign-born Canadian, can tell many "native" born Canadians about Black Canadian history and experience that would be news to them.

we CAN learn from each other, no matta weh we bawn.

And in the same breath their visit doesn't automatically qualifies them as the authority on Jamaican life.

But your knowledge of "history" is simply knowledge based on what you learnt or read. Many can read history texts about Jamaica...and many of them are misleading and false coming from Euro-centric perspectives and LIMITED knowledge as we now find out...so your point is? .. but this is not the crux of the matter here. If I get it right, and I think I do, the crux of the matter is how much should we allow false information to spread over the internet? False information about Jamaica.

I remember Ackeegirl mentioning her disgust at what she had read in one of those forums about Jamaica. It is our duty, it is our love for Jamaica that make some of us come out and voice our contempt at the maligning of our beloved country showing Ja as a place for cheap and easy sex and of course the weed. This has been attempted. The reaction from some of the visitors has not been positive.

Agreed but, IMHO, that isn't what is happening in the tourist section. People are coming in and posting information that is not accurate. When an attempt is to correct that, some of the visitors aren't open to receiving the information.

Also, some people have posted about some of their experiences and dwelled on the shall we say less than wholesome aspects of the tourist trade. Others have given their take on it and WE have been attacked as if we don't have a right to comment on things that have an impact on our own country. That is where some of the objections are coming from.
