Much of what you posted I agree with.
Your position on Jesus recieving the Spirit at Baptism, is puzzling.
Was Jesus ever without the spirit of God?
Was he not God in flesh?

I see the annointing spirit at his baptism as a sign to John that this was indeed the Christ, John had earlier sent his disciples to Jesus to ask him if he was the Christ, and God told John that the one on whom he John saw the spirit alighting was the Christ.

Of the four gospels only Mathew's paints a picture that the vision was seen by everyone and only Mathew's represents the figure as a bodily form of a dove.

Mark and Luke suggests it is John the Baptist as the he who had this vision.

All our popular immages of this event uses the Mathews account.

John's gospel however seems to isolate this vision to John the Baptist only.

One last question with your timing of Jesus being "first born".

Was it at his baptism or was it at his resurection?

The terms "first born of creation" and "first born from the dead" do they mean the same?

Finally, Our baptism is compared to Jesus death not Jesus's baptism, your comments welcomed.

accepted: I guess you are going to have to take issue with the various commentaries that set forth that position. It would seem a matter of interpretation of Psalm 110:4 "The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek." In some circles, this suggests that Melchizedek's office was exceptional; none preceded or succeeded him. Here the Psalmist was making a declaration of Christ, who himself would have been exceptional.

OF course seeing Jesus - God - was from the very beginning, there was none before Him, and once He assumed the role of our High Priest, which resulted in the abrogation of the Levitical system, no one succeeded Him.

As an interesting aside, while it is commonly accepted that Melchizedek came upon the pages of history mysteriously, and left in the same manner, some commentaries indicate it is an old tradition among the Jews that Melchizedek was Shem, the son of Noah, who may have survived to this time. Melchizedek was a Canaanitish prince, a worshipper of the true God, and in his peculiar history and character an instructive type of our Lord, the great High Priest (Heb. 5:6, 7; 6:20).

Of course we are all engaging in conjecture at this point, so there will be any number of perspectives on it and I certainly respect yours, as I do the others.

(I see that you are taking issue with the purpose of the Holy Spirit coming down on Him as a type of rebirth and saying that it was more for the sake of identifying Him? Well regardless of how we view the Holy Spirit indwelling Jesus, whether for rebirth or for identifying Him as the Christ, is that not what is required to identify all of sinful man with God? Is not the identification with God the outcome of our rebirth and that by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? Jesus the man was first born in a manger to Mary and Joseph. His second birth from sinful man into spiritual man was at His baptism. However at His death He did not die as sinful man He died as “The Lamb of God" pure and spotless perfectly righteous without spot or blemish in a mans body but with the nature of God. He died man but was raised God. If that is not true then we who believe are in deep trouble because in order to be raised into a new spiritual body at His return we must first die with a spiritual nature which we received at the time we were baptized into the Holy Spirit of God.

15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Our baptism is a type of death to the sinful nature, which Christ secured for us through his resurrection from the dead. He was first then in that regards, and not till he was resurrected did anyone receive the Holy Spirit through baptism. Our baptism then is death to the carnal nature and new life through Christ. But as I said just as all men would have to be baptized and receive the Holy Spirit to put to death the sinful nature so also Christ although he was without sin yet He had taken on the sins of the world by becoming a man, He also would have to satisfy this requirement while in the flesh so that God’s perfect justice could be served.

My only contention with this is that Jesus never had a carnal nature, he was born of the Holy Spirit, what he needed to complete our Salvation was to be born of water. God having perscribed salvation by water and by the Spiritual protection of man during the flood had made a oath sealed in a rainbow. Jesus repeated that to Nicodemus, except a man be born of water and the spirit he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.

While on the cross, Jesus took our sin and for the first time he felt the separation sin brings between man and God, he felt the spiritual separation of his soul from God's spirit that Adam felt in the Garden when he realised he was naked, at that point Jesus became carnal for us and cried out in Greek "Eli, Eli, Lama Sabatini", My God, My God why have you abandoned me.
This is the first time the man Jesus spirit and Gods spirit did not share one purpose.

What happen next was that principalaties and powers in the spiritual realm were cast down as Gods perfect sacrifice took on himself the burden of our sin and there on the cross Jesus uttered the sweetest words Known to mankind IT IS FINISHED.

Then commiting his spirit back to its source the man Jesus died. And Hell got its "butt" kicked.

Accepted Thanks for your response, just a few things that I have to question or have clarified but thanks. And yes iron does sharpen iron [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] . My whole contention is that as Christians there are some basic facts that we should all know. Yes there will be disagreements but the basics are important to know before we even get into deeper spiritual matters. In a forum such as this where do we stand as Christians if we are in doubt about the basics? Which leads me to another question: If we don't even agree on the basics or are in doubt about it then what in God's name do we believe and why do we believe such a dubious thing?

Regardless of that He was still a man. However I am in total agreement with you that He was sinless and holy. I guess a better term would have been in the likeness of man .

Ok I will agree with this for in the true sense of the word he was without the sins of the carnal nature so yes I will agree here however He was born in the likeness (purposely done by God) of man who has a carnal nature. I guess this is why many say that God tricked the devil.

That's a new take on it. My understanding was that being reborn of water is a picture of true birth from the uterus with it's amniotic fluid or water as it is called by some. I thought the rainbow was God's promise never to fill the earth with water again for after He had flooded the earth He repented of doing it and swore never to do it again and sealed this oath with the rainbow.

My comment that your position was lacking, was not meant as a "put down" rather to highlight the fact that the commentaries you cited mixed the Melchesidec preisthood with the Levitical Preisthood in the context of the scripture quotes you took from the book of Leviticus.

The Book Of Hebrews show the Melchesidec preisthood to consist of two High Preist Melchesidec and Jesus.

Note that this preishood was not subject to the Law of carnal Commandment but the Law of Endless Life. Note also the preisthood being changed there was need for a change of Law, also this preisthood was bestowed by an oath, the levitical preisthood by descent.

Heb 7:14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
Heb 7:15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,
Heb 7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
Heb 7:17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Heb 7:18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

Note that the law makes men High preist which have an infirmity, hence the need for washings to present themselves pure before God, but this Jesus was made a High preist by an oath of God and need make no recompense for his own sin as he was separate from sinners.

Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
Heb 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
Heb 7:28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

Mine is not the purpose to refute what any commentaries may say but to search the scriptures to find out if these things are so without pride of place but in humble desire to learn daily about the things of God.
