Pepper,

I had the exact scenario when I was 16 and my parents said no to the blood transfusion route and I had to eat liver, callaloo, and beef soup morning noon and night, plus the iron pills and I forget what else the doctor gave, but I was out of school for 2 weeks, after that I just kept those things in my diet and eat them every once in a while and I have been fine ever since.

((Pepper)) My mother has pernicious anemia, whereby the stomach doesn't absorb the intake of iron, and has to have B12 shots every month or two (can't remember) as well as an iron supplement. Hers is further a problem because she is also diabetic as well as having hypotyroidism.

I have been following your tips and I feel so much better already. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] I have been eating green bananas, spinach, calaloo, beef, and I even had liver!!! (first time in about 12 years)

I don't know what my iron count is, but now I can walk 20 yards without getting fatigued.

Oh yes, and I went to a west indian grocer and purchased a bottle of "Beef, Iron and Tonic". That stuff is no joke

Thanks for the update Pepper, and I'm so glad it's good news.

As for liver, I know this sounds gross, but here goes. I can't stand eating cooked liver or the smell of it cooking and lingering in the air. One time I read about putting the raw liver in the blender with vegetable juice such as V8 and then drinking that. It tasted OK to me - so much better than cooked. It had hardly any of that awful smell. Plus cooking destroys the vitamins. Just in case this helps anyone else who can't stand cooked liver. And my apologies to anyone grossed out by reading this.

dont you like it? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] (mi been there ), you can try the liquid geritol also, dont take too much liver though it not good fi the pressure, and BTW I know this sound gross- "but me who feels it knows it "- the liver must be had rare - not the overcooked one like that at Sango's (mi would a do good with some a fi them - now that mi no longa poor a blood). Hope the count goes up and hope the tests show what is wrong...
For the past four years I'm going through my own iron difficiency ... managed to reach 11.6 at one point but it wont go up any further. And I think I have had enough needles poking my baxide so mi think mi willing fi them do no more tests (everything them do come back negative and I dont have the luxury of heavy periods to blame it on).

OH! that sounds too gross. I don't know if I will have anymore liver, but if I do, it will not be blended with juice.

I know it sounds bad, but it must be something about the tomato juice that neutralizes the liver taste/odor - maybe the same principle as tomato juice and skunk odor [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] .

Anyway, how are you feeling?
