When I order sushi I say "Ika Nai Tamago Nai Kudasai". I can't stand Ika and Tamago makes me lose my cookies instantly. Yet, the Japanese consider it to be a delicacy and can't get enough of it. Sounds like you are on to something there. I am learning Japanese and encouraging my son to learn it too. There are affordable courses in Toronto and the JET programme is a perfect opportunity for young people to really sharpen their skills in Japanese. Did you participate in it Kingston? When I was in Tokyo last week, at the Kabukiza, I met a young African American woman who is in the JET programme. Her mother had come over to visit. We all sat together and had a pleasant exchange. I ran into about 6 - 8 Black women but no Black men other than the one at the airport (with his blonde girlfriend [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif[/img] bound for Toronto. I was told that the brothers hang out at TGI Fridays in the Shinigawa area....but I digress [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif[/img]

I did not take part in JET despite my friendly nature [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70456-eyebrows.gif[/img], my patience is not good enough to teach little kids english and I hear first hand some of these kids are crazy calling the teacher gorilla or monkey and other stuff, I might have to drape up somebody in class cause mi noh play dat.

The brothers you seek are over in Roppongi or shibuya getting thier freak and baller on....yes it can be lonely in japan for gaijin women as the men are very scarce too.

Well there seemed to be men every where in Ginza. The place was CRAWLING with men. Really meticulous and well put together, all wearing perfectly pressed suits, and carrying those little bags. They seemed so serious, constantly staring into their cell phones. Of course when you get a glimpse, it isn't text messages they are picking up....it's games they are playing on the cell phones [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/breakdance.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif[/img] ....the teenagers too. When they are on the subway, walking on the street, you name it, they're playing games on the cell phones. I guess we'll soon see that here too. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/desdentado.gif[/img]

Apparently a lot of them are shy and don't speak much English so they are reluctant to approach. They do respond enthusiastically though when approached even if you just start up a short conversation.

The only way you would get me in the hot spring is when no one else is around. A white guy told me when you're a foreigner they give you a good looking over too....the curiousity factor. I don't think I could handle it. I wish there were some where you could where bathing suits.

I did try the tradtional baths.....WONDERFUL!! Don't think I want to go back to Western style....not a chance.

I loved sleeping traditional style. This time I only stayed in Ryokans, no hotels.



The slippers business in the toilets struck me as a bit unusual though.

I guess I should do a trip report.

mek yu white fren gwan, cause dem do the same ting too when Yard man show up, glad to report I kept the myth alive and well [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/dance01.gif[/img] the thing is to go in the hot springs right after dinner if you stay at a onsen because the japanese usually wait until late in the night before they take a bath, you really stayed in a traditional room, noh sah mi leff Jamaica so mi noh have fi sleep pon floor mi noh see why mi should go back to dat... [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif[/img]

I'll keep that in mind about the onsen. If I can be in there by myself fine but mi too prudish fe share a bath with a group of people.

Yup, I stayed at 3 different Ryokans, 2 in Tokyo and one in Kyoto and LOVED IT!!!! The futons were comfortable and the blankets were very thick and warm. I loved the Yukatas, the tea, the gardens, everything. Quite different. I would do it again in a heart beat.

Most places had a mixture of western and traditional toilets. The ultra modern western ones you're seeing more and more along with the automatic soap dispensers. I like the machines that talk to you (e.g where you pay your parking, the GPS's in the rental cars and taxis - exellent animation too).

Did you notice there are rarely any hand towels in Japan's bathrooms, people normally walk with dem kerchiff, so mi just flash the wata dem off a him hand the fuss time, now mi walk with mi white silk kerchiff like mi deh a Jamaica again.

No one explained that to me and re: the slippahs I though WHA'MEK!! Till de day I got caught and was going to burst and had to use the traditional toilet and I thought "now I get it". I did run into an American woman who was staying with her brother and Japanese sister in law and she said re: the slippahs "What the heck is up wid dat?" [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/704555_dwl.gif[/img] She said "They have some unusual customs re: bathing and toilet." She refused to sit on the stool to shower.
