Chapter XXII

Present day

It’s been five days since Michelle’s been in Jamaica. A routine of sorts had been established: she rose, made food for herself and tried to not be bored out of her wits for the rest of the day. Audley left early in the mornings. So did Dean. Nicey stayed home with the boys and Aunt Myrtle. Nicey made breakfast for the children and had them eat in the kitchen. Michelle assumed that Myrtle ate early and probably in her room for she was hardly ever seen through out the day.

Michelle wandered the house, oftentimes coming up on the disapproving glare of Nicey. Some rooms were open and available for exploration. Others were not only closed, but locked. Nicey came upon Michelle trying the handle of one such door and snapped, “Yuh put anyting een deh?”

Michelle jumped, her hand instinctively going to her stomach. Niceye’s eyes narrowed. Michelle turned to her and tried a friendly smile. Nicey’s glare killed it. Michelle sighed.

“I was just wondering what was there, that’s all.”

“Nutn whe concern yuh,” Nicey snapped.

“Fine!” Michelle threw up her arms in the air and moved away from the door. Then she said, “What’s wrong with you anyway? You’ve been all over me like a rash ever since I’ve got here. Why?”

“Rash? Move fram mi wid yuh nastiness,” Nicey sneered.

Michelle raised her eyebrows in amusement, “Seriously, you’re not that thick, are you?”

“Mi ooda radda tick dan maaga lakka yuh,” Nicey stepped to Michelle. Michelle was thankful that her mother had always spoke in the broadest patois with her, for her understanding of it would highly enhance her fun at Nicey’s expense.

Michelle chuckled. “Yeah, you’re thick all right. Two watts?”

“To wha…?” Nicey was becoming even angrier, sensing that she was being toyed with, but not understand how.

“Light bulb,” Michelle was laughing outright and Nicey spun from her.

“Mi nuh have time fi yuh foolishniss. Mi have tings fi do. As fi yuh, jus mek sure say yuh tan outta mi way, cawse yuh nuh waa tangle wid mi, awhoa,” Nicey stormed off.

Michelle called to her, “Hang on a sec!”

Nicey slowed and turned slightly.

“You forgot to say “Your Highness!” Michelle called. She was sure she could see Nicey’s teeth grind from where she stood. Nicey muttered something uncharitable and Michelle called, “Fine then. Off with your head!”

Michelle was still chuckling when she went out on the porch. She was happy not to have run into Aunt Myrtle for her bought of levity was already wearing off. She sighed and sat in the chair to the left of the door while she eyed the rocking chair that was at the right of the door. She’d like to sit in on it, rock back and forth, enjoy the quietness of the day. But that was Aunt Myrtle’s chair, and no one sat on it except her.

She tried to get comfortable, stretching her legs out before her, thankful that her stomach wasn’t acting up today. She quickly pushed the thought of her pregnancy from her mind. She was in Jamaica! The land of her ancestors. She should be having a great time – sight seeing, discovering her heritage firsthand, making new friends. Instead, here she sat, ruminating on how much dust could possibly roil off the driveway and whether her Aunt would deign to speak to her today. She sighed again. Just then, the Jeep turned into the yard. She sat up, surprised to see Audley back so soon. He jumped out of the vehicle and walked briskly toward the house.

Michelle stood up and called out, “Is everything ok?”

“Yeah man, yeah man,” he murmured distractedly. “Whe mama deh?”

“Uh, somewhere inside? I haven’t seen her…”

“No worry. Yuh aright?”

“Yeah, I’m fi-” but he was already through the door, calling out “Mama? Mama whe yuh deh?”

Michelle sank back onto the chair, mildly curious and wishing she was brave enough to just commandeer the jeep and drive off. She sighed again, knowing that Audley would be furious and that she did not want to antagonize him – seeing as he was the only one who’d made an attempt to be friendly to her so far. What about Dean? A tiny voice asked. She rolled her shoulders, unwilling to think about him. He was trouble, she could already tell and that was the one sort of trouble she did not need. Further, he was her cousin for goodness sakes! Again she sighed but the next moment she was almost jumping out of her skin when a voice said over her shoulder: “Tap sigh man. Yuh a gwan like de worl deh pon yuh shoula.”

She looked around and smiled ruefully at Audley. “Hiya. I’m just a little bored, that’s all.”

“Yuh waa come fi a drive?”

Her face perked up and her eyes sparkled. “Really? Don’t you have to get back to work?”

“No,” he said, frowning. “Supm come up. So mi jus tek de day. Nuff money dis a go cost me eno!” he swore beneath his breath. Michelle wanted to take him up on the offer, but she did not want to be more of an intrusion than she already was.

“Well…” she stood up, not knowing what to say.

“Come man,” he said, not waiting for her.

“Wait,” she called. “Lemme just grab my purse…”

“Hurry up,” he growled already at the Jeep. Michelle rushed inside and collided with Nicey.

“Whe yuh nuh look whe yuh a go!” Nicey snapped.

“Sorry, sorry,” Michelle muttered, attempting to go by her.

“So whe yuh in such a rush fi go?” Nicey demanded.

“Out,” Michelle snapped, dashing into the room and grabbing her purse. A quick look inside told her she had her passport, her wallet, lipgloss, comb, mirror, tissues and pantyliners with her. Snapping it shut she raced out of the room. She almost jerked to a halt when she saw Aunty Myrtle standing at her door watching her. Instead, she offered a diffident smile and rushed outside. Audley was in the vehicle, the motor running, and Nicey was standing at his window, arguing. Michelle jumped into the passenger and slammed the door, enjoying the baleful glare that Nicey threw her way.

“I’m ready,” she sang out.

“Eeh eh, tek yuh long enough,” Audley grumbled.

Nicey said, “Yuh know say Mama nah go like dis eno.”

“Yuh fret up yuh self bout tings too much man,” he said, impatient to be off.

“Well, it ooda betta if yuh wait fi mi get ready so dat mi can come to,” she retorted.

“An who a go stay wid de pickney dem? Mama?”

“Well, it nah go tek mi long fi get dem ready…”

“Dis a no no r___ outting eno,” he snapped, throwing the vehicle into drive, forcing her to step back. “See yuh layta.”

Michelle could not help stealing a glance through the side mirrors at Nicey, who was enveloped in dust but whose anger still managed to make its way through.
