Nicey stood back. What was going on? Had Myrtle been waiting up for Dean’s return too? Nicey was tempted to inch closer and try to listen in, but fear held her back. Instead, she decided to layway Dean in his room.

“How it go?” Myrtle asked, sitting up in her bed, her pillows providing the needed comfort for her back. Her back had been acting up today, more so than usual. She felt it ironic that for one who had always been conscious of posture and keeping a straight back that she would have troubles with her back. Myrtle refused to see a doctor about her pains, preferring instead, to pop Panadols and drink herbal teas when it all became too intense. It was a sign of weakness, this obsession folks had of running to the doctor as though he was God and could cure all. Myrtle had no time for weakness.

Dean wondered if he should part the netting so as to see her better, but he was uncomfortable doing so. The whole room made him uncomfortable. He remained near the closed door and glanced up at her occasionally, seeing the slight shifting darkness behind the netting and knew that that was where she sat, but seeing no more than that. He wanted to flip a light switch on, but knew that he daren’t.

“Bwoy Mama, it neva go so good eno.”

“Whappn?” she asked sharply.

“Well, firstly, mi tek Paulie wid mi again. Dis time wi tek couple tings. Wi stop a Junior first. Im come out an a try reason wid mi. Mi tell im say mi nuh come fi hear talk. Eeda im have it or not. Im stawt talk bout it no right an all kinda fawt. So mi had was to bus im knee cap. Mi neva waa do dat eno. Junior is aright, cool bredda. But business a business. Mi remind im say mi did warn im say mi whenna come back eena week. An im a fawm fool bout im a come try reason…” Dean hissed his teeth in derision.

“Im lucky say mi neva bus to two a dem. At leas mi lef im so im couldan crawl back inside. Mi mek sure tell im say im nuffi stay in deh too long eno, cawse, im need fi hangle im business. Cawse nex time mi drap dung pon im, im nah go get up.”

Aunt Myrtle said nothing and Dean continued. “Mama wi had was to bunout a few tings eno. Some place wi stop een an nobody eeda no dideh, or dem a hide. Mi nayin eena no mood fi a call out fi talk to no one. A daddy cawnas dat. So mi jus toss two gas bakkle an fling a lighta…”

“Eena de house?” Dean saw the slight shifting and shook his head but realized belatedly, that she would not be able to see. Or could see? Nicey had once compared her to a puss – saying she should’ve died so many times already and yet still lived. Maybe she, like a puss, could see in the dark? Dean shuddered and continued.

“No man. Not eena de house. Rouna back. Any likkle ting dem have colleck roun deh. Dem deh people de love have pile a bangarang all ova de place…

“Funny enough, wi set back eena de cyar an a watch a few a dem, an no bady no come out fi try dash likkle waata pon de fyah. Mi ongle hope dem did dideh or else, dem a go come back to nutn but pere ashes.”

Dean shifted and decided to skip a detailed telling and instead jumped to what had happened last.

“We stop by Maas Tyrone. As we pull up, wi si say nuff people siddung pon dem verandah. You couldan tell fram yuh drive in say a wi dem whenna wait pon. Paulie stawt reach fi im piece. Mi tell im fi cool it. Wi get outta de cyar an im tan up an de door while mi walk up to dem. Fus of all, Maas Tyrone big titti wife stawt talk bout mi fi lef an if mi try anyting she have nuff witness. An how dem have appointment fi gaa court an how dem a go serve yuh wid paypas.

“Mi whenna try get a glimpse pon de face dem whe did dideh, but mi nuh sure. Mi tink mi know some a dem but still… Anyway, de ooman galang so bad Mama, alla come step to big man… all when har husban a call har back an a tell har say it dun, she fi dun it… So when she step to mi Mama, mi had was to do supm… Mi couldn jus mek she a gwan so, especially infronta people…

Myrtle waited for Dean to continue.

“So mi jus reach ova an gi har one r__ tump-”

“Watch yuh mout.”

“-enna har face. She drop a grung. Mi hear chair stawt move back an nuff movement like dem a go try rush mi. So Paulie move fawod an shiff im shirt. Even doah it whenna get dawk, dem couldan still si say im a carry. So dem sekkle back. Mi call Maas Tyrone an when im come closa mi tell im say a f___ry dis. Im shouldan know betta. Im know say wi nah skin up. Im shouldan control im ooman. Now, she liddung pon de grung like she tuntid… Mi tell im say, caw mi feel a likkle sorry fi im, mi a go gi im a few extra days fi hangle im bizniz… but afta dat, all fayva dun! Mi tell im say mi no waa come back nex time an si no whole bag an pan a people a wait fi look pon mi like dem ting a show. Mi tell im say if im nuh waa nutn happn to dem, den is fi im responsibility fi mek dem tan a dem yawd. So afta dat, mi an Paulie lef.”

Dean waited for Aunt Myrtle to say something. He wanted out of this room. He wanted to have a shower and climb into bed. The adrenaline rush from the night’s events had worn off and left him feeling drained. He wished she would say what she had to say if anything. Sometimes he hated this, standing around waiting for her to give her edicts as though she was the beginning and the end of him. But it was all a part of the game. And he was a player.

“Yuh pay im?” she asked finally.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

For a further minute or so, there was silence. Then she spoke, “Yuh neva ha no business a tell Tyrone say im have few more days. Dat is not fi yuh decide. Mine yuh know. Mine yuh tink say a yuh a run dis ting. Me will decide if anybady a get more time. Me will decide when and what will happen. Me. No mek dat mistake again, yuh hear mi?”

“Yes,” Dean gritted through his teeth.

“Good. Aright, galang a yuh bed. Sleep good.”

“Night Mama,” he muttered and left quickly, anger giving him the energy he thought he’d run out of. He stormed down the hallway, uncaring if he woke anyone although the thought fleetingly crossed his mind that he could make a detour to Michelle’s room. A sardonic smile lifted one corner of his mouth. Cousin or no, there was something about her. Paulie would say it’s just cause she’s a fariner. Dean didn’t think that that was what it was. Still she’d probably require talk and he wasn’t in the mood. So he continued to his room, entering and snapping the door shut behind him.
