I feel the nervousness return to the pit of my stomach at the thought of meeting Big Red's Mom. I had just gotten comfortable around his grandfather and was perfectly content to spend the rest of the week right there on that porch. However, I knew I would have to face my fear and head into Kingston to meet his Mother.

We say our good-bye's and Big Red's grandfather tells me he enjoyed meeting, and ask me to take care of his grandson. I promise to do my best and give Roots senior a big hug. Next thing I know, we are in the car about to make the hour and a half drive to Kingston.

As soon as I sat down again it hit me. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] I was sick. Not just coughing and congested... I was sick. It was as if as long as I was standing around talking and laughing I didn't really notice how bad I felt. Once I got in the car and got comfortable it hit me like a ton of bricks. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70361-embarassed.gif[/img] I knew I had a fever and the cough was more than just irritating. It was deep seeded and harsh. It sounded like it was coming from my toes and my back was hurting from the sheer force of each cough. I was doing my best to keep everything under control and not let on that I felt as bad as I did. I just wanted everything to go well and not feel badly once we got into Kingston. It was only a matter of seconds before I was asleep in the car.

Next thing I know we are pulling into a driveway. I look at the clock on the car's dashboard and see that it has only been about a half an hour. "Where are we?," I ask. Big Red tells me we are at his Grandmothers house in St. Elizabeth. "Your Grandmother?" I ask. He says yes, that I am to meet his Mothers Mom. The nerves return to my stomach and I raise my seat back and take off my seat belt.

My boyfriend gives me a look, ask if I am alright, and helps me out of the car. I tell him I am fine, just a little tired and worn out, but that I sill only have a slight cough due to some allergy... nothing to be worried about. I knew it was a bold face lie, but I wanted so desperatley [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]ray: to be well that I wouldn't admit to anyone how badly I felt.

We are standing in the driveway, he gives me a quick hug and says "Don't worry, we won't stay to long, and I am sure you will love my Grandmother." We walk to the back of the house and there is this beautiful woman sitting on a bucket in the backyard washing dishes from the pipe. She has long curly hair that is styled in corn rows and a long cotton skirt on. She looks our direction and says "Who's there?" Big Red looks at her and says "Grandma, it's me."

You could tell instantly that Big Red's Grandmother thinks the sun and moon revolve around him. Her whole face lit up [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] like the christmas lights on the front of the house. She quickly set aside what she was doing and greeted him with a big ol' hug. Then came my turn, I was introduced and she gave me the same warm hug. She says it is a pleasure to meet me and she is quick to offer us food and drink. Before I can even get seated out back there is a plate of fried fish and vegetables produced as well as ginger ale.

I feel awful and am trying to stiffle my coughs and sit properly in my chair. It was proving difficult to do b/c my back hurt so bad. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] I ate a few bites of my food before giving it to Big Red to finish. I just felt terrible and had no appetite at all. Big Red explained to his grandmother that I wasn't feeling too well and she wasn't the least bit insulted that I didn't want to eat.

The conversation is easy and I am really enjoying Big Red's Grandmother. I figured if my boyfriends Mother is anything like her Mother everything will be cris. I really really enjoyed the time we spent over at the Grandma's house. It was the highlight of my trip at that point. Grandma was busy boiling water and getting ready to prepare Mannish Water and I just watched in awe at the contents of the pot. I have never seen Mannish water and was dumbstruck watching her pour the contents into the pot. It was interesting and my boyfriend had a good laugh at my amazement. At one point Big Red's G-ma looked at him and said "You know Grandma loves you right baby?" He looked at her and said "Of course, and you know I love you too." "Yes baby," she replied, "I know.

Not too long after we stopped there it was time to head into Kingston. I was upset to be leaving b/c I was having a good time. I also wasn't feeling too bad b/c the comapny was so nice. I really loved his Grandmother and her warm spirit was helping me to feel better. You know when you are sick you just want to be taken care of and looked after. Big Red's G-ma was just the type of person for that sort of thing. She is just so beautiful and warm. I hated to leave.

We said our goodbye's and as I hugged his Grandmother she told me she loved me. That she enjoyed meeting me and hoped to see me again soon. I told her I really enjoyed meeting her and was upset to be leaving so soon. She handed me a bag full of Mango's and said I was to eat as many as I could while in Jamaica. I told her I would and turned to walk to the car. Just then the rain started to fall and the nervous feeling returned to my stomach.

We were off to Kingston...

Roots is from St. Elizabeth and I have never been there before... the patois is so quick and mumbled. I was fearing anytime his father asked me something..."

Hahahaha!!! And St. Elizabeth Patois was my FIRST experience with it!! I spoke to my friend's dad on the phone... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] Luckily we were on a 3 way call and I had an interpreter!!
I'm getting so much better at it now!!
I think it's the Irish heritage of a lot of St. Bess people. I hear a lot of people speak and it reminds me of my Grandparents who were from Ireland. They speak fast and barely move their lips whan they speak. The patois of St. Bess sounds more like a brogue! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
