mi naah seh a ongle one class a people inna ja know patwa but a big part a di population "only know patwa" and cannot adequately express demselves in any addah "language" adequately. So, if we don't recognize deer means of expression den we technically "don't recognize dem". Is dehso the class ting come in. Since, the patwa speakers, like my granny, tend to sound "unintelligent" when they attempt the "king's english" they will never be considered "equal" in a society that connects intelligence with verbal skills. Andastan?

I think that it is fine how it is...having our own dialet..and at the same time still being able to speak english...

up top is how i prefer to write patois. since my system isn't widespread i use standard english for the sake of being understood.

I also am proud that I am learning to read the language thanks to you all (Evan) It is the sound that makes it not the spelling.

Dats di problem!! Having our own "dialect" is not enough. Once you leave Kingston and head to parts rural. Many people, particularly the elderly, probably can't speak anyother way. So, it's more than just "having our dialect". It's about curtailing the marginalization of a large portion of the population and allowing them into the social discourse.

i think literacy is a problem that remains the same whether or not patois is included as an official language. people would still have to learn to read and write signs and documents in patois too wouldn't they?

I agree with you that lack of standardization of the written language is a problem. But that could be overcome...easily. I'm working on a system with addition of new characters to the english alphabet and the use of diacritical marks as used in German, Russian, Greek and Spanish to change the sound of certain letters.

As someone said below, "it's the sound" of the language that people all over the world loves.

i won't discourage you but i don't believe the additional diacritics are necessary. if you think about computing and keyboard layouts, you should see why it's desirable to keep a system that doesn't rely heavily on accented characters though i can see why you would consider it: it is only really important if you wish to convey precise attributes of intonation and pronunciation.

True, but my system will get non-Jamaicans to understand how to speak the language sysematically, instead of trying to memorize phrases.
