Everything was hazy. The roaring in her ears was comforting. It reminded her of the sound she'd get from putting Pauline's conch shell to her ears. She put her hand up to hold the shell closer and was surprised to find it not there.

Irma blinked rapidly, trying to clear the haze. She dropped her hands and they fell to the soft leather of the armchair. Mr. Jones' armchair. The one that was behind his desk. In his office. She straightened abruptly. Clarity returning with a vengeance.

"You aright now?"

She looked down to find Mr. Jones kneeling on one knee before her, his hands on either side of the chair. She pushed at him violently. He fell back and she jumped up out of the chair.

"Whe dem deh? Which pawt dem deh?" she screamed, racing around to the front of the desk, her eyes scanning the floor and every surface for the damning photos - the ones she needed to see again, just to be sure her mind wasn't playing a trick on her. The ones she wished weren't.

They were no where in sight. She rounded on Mr. Jones, who was getting up awkwardly. Her breathing constricted, she demanded, "Which pawt dem deh? Gimmie dem!"

"No."

"Wha yuh mean 'NO'?" she fairly screeched. "Mi want si dem! Mi waa fi si a who eena dem!"

"You know is who. Yuh nuh need fi si dem again. Matta fac, nobady need fi si dem again, if yuh do whe yuh need fi do."

"Jesus..." she breathed.

"Look Irma, I don't need to spell it out fi yuh. We have the pictures. We have the negatives. But only we have dem. If yuh try fi run, if yuh try fi go to de police, all we have to do is present dem.

Yuh neva look pan dem long, but yuh si enough fi knoa say, you were in it. Right up to yuh eyeball..."

"But oonuu drug mi! Mi neva knoa whe mi didda do!" she was hysterical.

"So you say," he shrugged. "Who a go believe dat? Yuh look like yuh was having de time of yuh life."

"Mr. Jones, please," she begged.

"Look baby, I don't want to hurt you. I just trying to help you help me. You do what we want, you get some money, we get wha we fi get and everybody happy. Das all. Is not de en a de worl eno."

"But mi can't do it!" she pleaded. "Mi cyaa go a Merica wid drugs. Dem a go ketch me! Dem a go chroa mi eena jail!"

"Nah, nobady nah go ketch yuh. Mi tell yuh aready: yuh can hardly smell de pill dem when yuh put dem up to yuh nose much less; dem weigh nex to nutn. Trust mi man, you wi aright."

He rounded the desk and approached her with care. When she didn't back away, he put his arm around her, "Mi nah go mek nutn happen to you Irma. You too special fi dat. Das why we choose you y'know. You deserve betta dan de life you have right now.

Talk de truth: Yuh did like Rocky house, doan? You like im furnishings and de nice cyar dem to, nuh true? Yuh can have alla dat to y'know Irma. Jus work wid wi an yuh wi aright. Yuh wi more dan aright. Yuh wi get set fi life!"

Irma sobbed into his shoulder. She was trapped. She wasn't tempted by his offer of riches. She was scared ____less by being caught and going to jail. She was even more terrified by what would be the fallout if those pictures should get out.

Irma was trapped.

"Is aright baby," he cooed. "Jus let it all out right now an no fret, mi wi tek care a you."

Irma disengaged herself and took a step back. "I need to go home."

"Is aright, you gwan home. I will contact you over de weekend. We will talk further. Aright?" Mr. Jones smiled benignly.

Irma backed out of the room, bumped into Micheal pushed past him and ran out of the building. She ran all the way home.

At home, she paced and paced. She chewed her nails down to the quick. She couldn't think clearly. By mid afternoon, when her brain felt like one gigantic cotton ball she decided that she needed to talk to someone. She ran to the corner phonebooth and called Pauline at work.

Pauline immediately sensed that something was terribly wrong and assured Irma that she would stop by on her way home.

"Lawd gal, yuh look like ____!" Pauline said as she entered Irma's apartment. "Wha de ____ happen?"

And it all came tumbling out. Irma could not believe the inordinate relief that came over her from unloading.

Pauline said nothing for a long while after Irma was finished. She got Irma a glass of water from the fridge and said, "So Mr. Jones is a druggis. Mi madda always say a de light an bright a de wickidess one dem eno, but damn, im tek mi by surprise! Mi can't even undastan why im woulda eena supm like dat - im no rich aready?

Anyway, dat's needa here nor dere. We need a plan."

Irma leant forward eagerly. She could always count on Pauline to fix things.

"Yuh say de laas time yuh see de pickcha dem was dis mawning? So more dan likely dem still eena im office."

Irma drew back, disappointed. She could see where this was headed. "Pauline, mi nat going to bruck eena im office. An why im woulda lef dem deh?"

"Why not?" Pauline countered. "Yuh tink im a go risk carrying dem home fi him wife find dem? No man, de more mi tink bout it, de more mi sure say dem eena im office."

"But even so," Irma stated flatly, "Rocky have a set to. Im mus. If not, im have de negative. Why badda tek Mr. Jones own when Rocky have de same ting? Mi need alla dem."

Pauline jumped up in agitation. "Well wi haffi tek dis one step at a time! Because Rocky might have some no mean say wi musn try get de one whe Jones have!

We haffi go eena him office. We haffi find dem! And wi haffi dweet soon. How bout tonight?"

"Tonight?" Irma squeeked in terror.

"Yes tonight," Pauline snapped impatiently. "We can't wait. Lend mi some jeans an ting, caa mi cyaa climb chroo no winda eena dem yah tight skirt yah. C'mon, we haffi get ready and wi still haffi plan how wi a go do dis."
