Whole awn to dis, Micheal tossed a bag through to Pauline, who scrambled to get it. Mickey climbed in and glanced with raise eyebrows at the closeness between Irma and the child.

Micheal indicated with his head in their direction but addressed Pauline in a low voice, Im say anyting yet?

Jus say im name Devon an oonuu Mr. Jones kill im sista.

What?!

Pauline shrugged and turned back to the other room. The child was suddenly alert, his eyes following the bag. From within, she withdrew a half of sub. Devon jumped up and grabbed it from her hand and promptly began stuffing his face. Pauline stifled the chiding that rose to her lips and pulled from the bag a half box of juice. She silently handed it to the child.

Noone bothered to temper his eating - it would have been pointless. When he was done, he belched soundly and pounded his chest. Man dat did sweet esi, he said with the biggest self-satisfied grin on his face.

Good, now tek it easy. Yuh eat so faas, yuh might throw up, Irma cautioned.

Siddung ova dehso, Mickey pointed. Yuh have some explaining fi do.

Devon sat, his fight seem to have left him and well-being was its replacement. Why yuh living up here, Devon? Irma asked.

He shrugged his boney shoulders. Cause mi no ha no whe else fi live.

Whe yuh family?

Country.

Which country? And how yuh reach a Kingston by yuhself?

Mi come fram St. Mary - dat no too far. Mi hop one bus an come dung.

Lawd, yuh hop bus all de way from St. Mary? Pauline was astounded. Suppose yuh did drap off?

Che, only prentice woulda drap off, he boasted.

So yuh family deh a St. Mary. Dem musi a dead wid worry over yuh, Irma said.

No, he said, his voice low. Dem probly nat even notice say mi gawn.

How long now since yuh lef? Micheal asked.

A week? A few days?

Mi lef when dem did have de Tastee Talent show. Caw a de fus ting mi si when mi come a Kingston.

The adults looked at each other and did a silent calculation. That was over 3 months ago!

Yuh a live up yah so long? Like dis? Irma was appalled. No food, sleep pan soso board? Suppose de lamp did tun ova an bun dung de place?

A wouldn nutn, he shrugged again.

Wha yuh mean? she cried. Everyday people eena de office dung stairs enough! Yuh coulda did kill alla wi!

Nah, it wouldn happen so. Ongle dat b___ c____ Jones. Im a di ongle one mi want fi dead!

A de secon time yuh say dat, Pauline stated. Because im kill yuh sista? Wha yuh mean by dat?

And slowly haltingly, the story came out, rife with pain and the wonder of loss.

Andrea Carpenter was a bright 16year old. She lived in a small district in St. Mary with her mother and small brother. Her mother sent Andrea to Kingston to live with an Aunt who would've been able to send Andrea to High School.

Things went well for Andrea. She blossomed at high school, aceing all her subjects and proving to be a most industrious and dedicated girl. Every summer she would return to that small district in St. Mary to help her mother and baby brother. She was like an angel to Devon who listened in awe as Andrea told him about the wonders of Kingston.

She promised him the moon. As soon as she graduated high school, she was going to get the best job possible, and then get a nice little apartment and send for both her mother and brother. Andrea told Devon about going to the movies and the toys in the stores. She told him that they would have a nice colour tv and he would probably even have his own room and not be required to share a bed with his mother anymore.

At 19, Andrea stopped visiting. She no longer arranged for her mother to be at the village shop on Sunday evenings to get a phone call. Her mother, worried, bundled her son along and brought him to Kingston. Her belly told her that something was wrong, plus the white owl had rested on the topmost branch of the cedar tree. Two nights in a row.

One look at her sister's face told her that her worst fears weren't unfounded.

The story as related to Miss Powell was this: Andrea had gotten a job with a fine refrigeration company. The first job she had applied for and she had gotten it! It was a sign for sure. She had taken her aunt by the offices of K, R & J Airconditioning and Refrigeration Company and proudly pointed out where her desk would be. Her aunt had been unimpressed, but had hidden it well from her niece.

Her niece had been happy working there, and the Aunt put aside her misgivings and enjoyed the happiness of her sister's child. In no time Andrea had saved enough money to rent a small apartment and the aunt saw her less and less.

Then one day Andrea came by, giddy with excitement. She was going to America. Her boss was going to help her to get there. No amount of reasonings as to his motives would dissuade Andrea.

Andrea 'visited' Miami twice within a month. Both times she came back bearing gifts.
She had toys for her brother, clothes, shoes... For her mother she had the long line bras she had always wanted and a nice perfume in the prettiest bottle...

She was storing these things, she had said. She was going to pay them a surprise visit. Oh, she couldn't wait to see their faces!

But the next time she came by to see her Aunt, her manner was vastly different from before. She was frightened. No doubt about it. She wouldn't tell her Aunt why. All she'd say was, Mek sure Mama and Devon get de tings dem.

That was the last time the Aunt saw her niece. Noone knew for sure where she was but there were murmurings...

Seem that her good girl, her pride and joy, the one with the firm head on her shoulders, had been running drugs. Something had gone wrong, and no one knew for certain what, but she hadn't returned from her last trip.

It was whispered that she had crossed the wrong people.

But who could she have been running drugs for? Her Aunt was dumbfounded to hear that it was Mr. Jones. Her niece's boss.

Ms. Powell in hysterics and towing her young son had gone screaming to Mr. Jones. He had comforted her but when her accusations became uncontrollable, he had threatened to have her arrested.

He stuffed some money down the front of her blouse and pushed her and her son from his offices, closing the door firmly behind them.

His mother went mad, Devon stated simply. His Aunt had tried to look after her, but when she began to wander out into the streets naked, asking everyone if they had seen her daughter, his Aunt had had no choice but to send her back to country, for fear they would take her away to Belleview...

It had been awhile now, since all that happened. He couldn't say how long ago, but his listeners surmised that it had been a year at least. Devon in the meantime had tried to take care of his mother, but it was never enough.

So one day he had left and came to Kingston, to kill Mr. Jones.

I beg money, he said, fi buy a gun. See dah hole yah? he moved over to the bucket, pushed it aside and showed a small hole of about an inch and a half in diameter. But I couldn mek enough money, he shrug was sad. De bigga bwoy dem always beat mi up an tek whe mi money. An whateva mi have lef mi woulda haffi try buy food widi.

Of the three listeners, Micheal was the most stunned. He looked at the girls, expecting to see his shock mirrored in their eyes and was dazed when it wasn't.

What? Did they know something he didn't?

Pauline and Irma exchanged looks, and at a subtle nod from Irma, Pauline said, Yuh betta believe it.

Micheal looked at them closely. Oonuu know supm.

Yes, Pauline replied. More than we ever wanted to know. And she relayed Irma's story, leaving out the sordid details. It knocked Micheal on his ***.

Mi always wan fi tell yuh nuffi use im bawtroom eno, Devon cried to Irma. Mi did jus fraid fi yuh.

Irma hugged him then pushed him away, So yuh didda watch mi when mi eena de bawtroom?!

He hissed his teeth in derision, Fi wha? Cyaa si nutn fram up yah so. Plus yuh too maaga anyway.

Irma raised her eyebrows but was interrupted by Micheal. So de ol bwoy figa say im have yuh whe im want yuh?

Irma swallowed painfully. Yes, she whispered. Wi didda try tink up a way an Pauline have a plan...

Wha? Micheal turned to Pauline, his eyes cold with rage.

Pauline shrugged uncomfortably. Well first we didda go get back de pickcha dem an wi didda go black out Irma face an sen dem to him wife an some odda people whe im do business wid. Her plan, now voiced to a third and fourth party, sounded flimsy.

Whe dat a go do? Micheal shouted in anger. Im wife might wrinch fi a while, but a no nutn. Yuh tink she no knoa say im have ooman before? And das all she a go tink it is eno, dat Irma a im ooman... An people whe im do business wid? Yaw joke? De whole a dem a go tink say im a some kinda don gargon! No, dat nah go work.

So whe yuh waa do den? Pauline was sharp. Micheal had made perfect sense and the thought that Mr. Jones could get away with it, made her cold with fear.

Mi affi tink fi a while, Micheal said, his voice trembling. An mi cyaa tink up yah so. Mi a get a crick eena mi neck an mi back. Mek wi go down.

Devon was suddenly fearful again. Mi wi stay, he said.

No! Irma was firm. Yuh nah stay up yah no longa.

A up yah mi live, he cried. A mi yaad dis.

No, her voice was gentlier. Yuh a go get a betta yaad, even if yuh affi live wid mi fi a likkle while.

From the spark in his eyes, everyone could see that Devon had found a new hero.

After putting out the light of the oil-lamp, they clambered down the pole and congregated around Micheal's car. Eena de lunch room? Pauline asked.

Nah, said Micheal. Mek wi go fi a drive. Mi tink betta when mi a drive.

Mr. Jones pulled into his park space with a lurch. He got out of the car, humming to himself, Irma, suga, my darlin girl, you are de only one in dis worl...

He fumbled with the lock to the front door, but in his inebriated state, failed to notice that it was already unlocked. On entering his office, he headed for his washroom and promptly peed all over the toilet seats. He ran his hands under the taps, returned to his office and fell into his chair.

A pounding was beginning in his head. And his throat was parched. He struggled out of his chair and went over to the filing cabinet. He pushed it away from the wall and with a florish produced a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Winston grinned with pleasure. The bottle held probably 2 or 3 ounces, but it would quench his thirst. He put his head back and put the bottle to his lips. Ahhh... it felt good. Tasted good. Almost as good as Irma tasted.

He lurched back to his chair and sat down and reached for the drawer. His other hand slipped down the neck of the bottle and the movement distracted him, causing him to remember the trick he had taught Irma.

The tightening in his groin made him smirk. Cila didn't know ___! Talk about he shouldn't drink caused when he did, he couldn't get it up. She didn't know ___! He could drink as much as he wanted and the rakkla would still function! He patted his crotch and took another swing. It all came down to the right girl. The right girl would cause nothing to stand in the way of his manhood performing at his best. Irma.

He reached for the envelope.
