Heard this suggestion on one of our talk shows this morning.

Apparently the head of the CRE (Commission for Racial Equality), Trevor Phillips (who is black) has suggested that one way to tackle the problems of young black males doing poorly in secondary education is to pay black teachers because they black. Apparently black kids need role models in schools and black men are not going into the teaching profession.

So black teachers = high performing black students? Is it that simple?

The problem is most teachers doesn't seem tp have amy imtrest in educating black students. They seem to tend toprawds discouraging it.
..but it does not stop with the teachers,or the education system,the whole British society impresses me as being so. I even observe this tendency with many ,not all Jamaican born British posters on these boards.They smack the attitude of 'su' v 'them', 'them' being not worthy of anything positive and as such written off.

So Dr, Trevor's suggestion has merit?

There is a tendency to split black kids into groups: African-Caribbean or African. Assuming people can tell the difference (or maybe this is another way of division) African children seemingly have no problems at school and do very well. Same with other non-whites.

Then again, we all know that over this side A-C children only have one parent who lets them do/wear/behave whatever or however they want and expect schools to pick up the slack

The responsibi;;ity of an education system is to mold it's ward into productive citizens,and if there is a problem of Caribbean children having only one parent. There is a reason,and it is moet likely the result of the education system in the past not molding it's ward into being productive 'employable' citizens.
Those parents are the product of the education system too.

He said that? I feel the urge to write a stongly worded letter to Mr Phillips. That smacks of racism to me. I do not know that black boys need black teachers or male teachers. I believe that they need teachers and schools which promote academic achievement for all of its children. Black boys need parents who believe and teach them that education is as essential for life as breathing and is not something to just fill their days. It is not an option. And finally, black boys need to attend to the business of learning, which should be their main business as children.

I believe these things to be true for all children. They need an environment at home and at school that supports them.

Phoenix, ditto what you said.

Dr Dudd, the British system is quick to point to stats that say children of one-parent homes don't do as well as other children. The promoted view is that MAINLY A-C children have one (unmarried) parent and therefore they BOUND to fail, whilst 'other' children come from divorces or deaths, or from wars/trauma overseas and are treated more sympathetically.

The UK system ain't fantastic but it's possible to succeed despite it. There are examples if one searches for them. My thought is, rather than cry out for black teachers (or more of them) the parents of these children should check themselves to see what they can/should be doing and if they feel they need help there are organisations that can help.

Maybe we've gotten too 'comfortable' in this country and have joined the 'English' in thinking "the Government should fix everything"

The problem is the education system in general,
Is corrupt and is tainted with lies to make our history, Excuse me>>>> THEIR history and lessons
shine.
Maybe teachers need teach truths,, and rather than the Opinions of the Authors writing the books

I have a son,, Who doesn't have an Option, other
than to excell in his studies,Black teacher or not. One parent or 2,,is all irrelavant.
Children should want to go to school,,It's about
time we teach our children the rewards of education, Like can you become a millionare if you follow the right path, it starts and finishes
with school.
I go over lesson with my son regualry, and correct him and the teacher when needed...

Example,,, My son came home with his whole
"Christopher Columbus discovered EVERYTHING bull crap",, And I had to re-educate him on who and what
Christopher really was,,,However books
tend to glorify this rapist, We actually
have a holiday here in the US to celebrate

K Love, I do the same with my niece, although to be fair her school is very careful NOT to teach them anything that could be deemed 'offensive' to anybody.

Also, I've taken her to JA twice already and we going again in December. Just as well she loves the place otherwise she'd have problems.

Having taught undergraduates at a historically black university - Howard University, all I can say is that my skin color or the skin color of my former colleagues did not make one iota of difference to my students.

A student will do well or poorly in a given course not because of the appearance of the teacher/professor but rather on how the teacher/professor does his/her job and how serious the student is in learning.

There are now many asian students in our schools but very few asian teacher/professor to teach them. Do they complain and wine about the lack of representation asian teachers in their schools? No. They get down to business and learn. It's time to stop the pathetic excuses and get to work. Show Bill Cosby that he is wrong.

BP that's a good point. Don't hear Africans, Asians and East Europeans complaining about the lack of teachers either.

The alternative to this is that the children fulfil the prophecy of failure then the adults are blamed for not joining the teaching profession

De yute need ppl in dese positions to look up to.
When I go in the schools and talk about rascism I see the black yutes light up and react different, to the point weh yt teacha a seh" I've never seen corry respond like this before, I wish we could do this more often.

Black males and females feel more comfortable with their own.
A Black teacher would also show more compassion pan de yute especially if dem payed well.

How is it a eedyat who shoot a ball troo a hoop get millions and a teacher who a teach de yutes and bring up a generation get didly?
A foolishness dat.

Asians don't face the same tings as blk ppl particularly males.
Many of you seem to not know what it is like to be black male in this world even if you are one.
Asians and blacks are not on the same page.
I'm quite sure Asians don't get pulled over for driving a posh cyaar

This comment really hits the nail on the head. The student's faces "light up" when the topic of racism is raised in a classroom setting. Now if the student's faces would "light up" if the topic of algebra or science was raised then maybe the abysmal scores in standardized exams that keep many from achieving their full potential would one day be covered under "20th & Early 21st Century Educational History"

Certainly, the fault does not lie exclusively with the students as many bad teachers and ignorant parents exacerbate the problem. However, as long as the biologically nonexistent concept of race remains an excuse rather than a non-issue, then nothing will be resolved.
