..mi nat an expert pan brakes, but dem did seh di brakes were the reason for the name, cause when dem stop, meaning seh when di driver step pon the brakes...air brakes..? mi no know..dem used to go "cheeeeee cheeeeee." Well I asked my friend from Jamaica and she says it is a bird that"s what they called a bird. But she has been here for 12 years, so the younger generation may use the word differently. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

The last innocent use of the word was in reference to a type of bus called the chi-chi 'white' bus. This was a large, white bus (made by the White Motor Company) that was introduced into Jamaica in the mid to late 1960s. It produced short, sharp, explosive, sneezing sounds whenever the air brakes were applied. The sounds were mimicked by the word chi-chi.
