This is quite not true

This is not quite true. Most of the Cuban Doctors help was simply pure politics and not about development.
When you are poor and at war all the time bad things happen to you and you cannot help efficiently.

The recent Tsunami is a case in point the underdevelopment, wars, and strife torn countries of Asia and Africa are in no position to respond effectively to a natural disaster and when aid arrives the poverty and underdevelopment caused much of it to be piled up at the ports unable to reach the most needy.
It was the same with Haiti and Jamaica in the last Hurricane.

So true, ackshawlly the shipment we made just reached it's destination after all these months; we just learned. At least they arrived.

Not wanting to turn this into a heated, political debate, but the US doesn't welcome Haitian refugees in quite the same way Jamaica does...

This isn't the point I was making, but it is true that a country's poverty may mean it receives aid which it cannot distribute due to poor infrastructure. However, there are ways around that. In extremely large, underdeveloped countries like Sudan, aid is airdropped over inaccessible areas. Aid workers on the ground are in charge of distribution directly to the needy.

Anyway, carry on with the discussion.

I don't want to either but this is simply not true Jamaica only recently started taking high profile Haitian refugees.
I was there and saw more than one boatloads of Haitian and Honduran refugees deported.

The USA has taken tons of Haitians so much so that there is a little Haiti in Miami.
The Bahamas, The Turks and Cacaos, Cuba, Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico takes in more Haitians that Jamaica have ever welcomed to its shore.

Accepted but air drops are very inefficient and I was listening to NPR just yesterday and heard that the lack of transport and the debris in the narrow, undeveloped streets of most of these Asian countries have hindered aid been distributed.

PRIME Minister P J Patterson says Jamaica will be making a monetary contribution to countries affected by the tsunami disaster in South Asia, given the magnitude of the disaster and the cost of sending personnel and relief supplies over long distances. He did not say how much money Jamaica would be contributing.

Patterson made the announcement during an interview on Radio Jamaica, yesterday.

it is hard to offer help when u doan have di way to help ironed out in the fuss place...we r a nation of noise an no follow troo...time an time again we exhibit it...big chat and later no defending of dat...much noise and it falls by the way after the first euphoria

even wid di Ivan debacles in di island...di day afta dem announce di setting up of di agency fi handle it, dem had di fuss problem wid it announced...

big heart and willingness to offer to help is one ting, doing it an being able to do it, is anodda

di road to hell is paved wid good intentions and all dat Portmore highway and highway 2000 is literal proof of that truism

Vehicles swept away in Bog Walk Gorge

The police have confirmed that four vehicles were washed away in the Bog Walk Gorge, St. Catherine Thursday morning. The passengers reportedly escaped unhurt.

Heavy rain over the past 24 hours has resulted in the Bog Walk Gorge in St. Catherine and the Yallahs Fording in St. Thomas being blocked.

The alternative route for the Bog Walk Gorge is via Barry or Sligoville. However the police are advising that small vehicles should not attempt to use Barry.

And Communications Manager for the National Works Agency (NWA), Vando Palmer, says the alternative routes for the Fording are also impassable.

The NWA says it has cleared some of the roads in St. Mary and Portland which have been blocked since Wednesday. However some are only open to single lane traffic. Mr. Palmer said that motorists should still proceed through the areas with caution.

And, the Meteorological Service has issued a Severe Weather Alert for northern and eastern parishes until six o'clock Thursday evening as a stationary front interacting with a mid to upper level trough continues to generate unstable weather conditions over the western Caribbean, including Jamaica.

THE BOG Walk gorge in St. Catherine and the Yallahs fording in St. Thomas remained impassable last night, following heavy rains which blocked several roadways, cutting off communities and stranding several persons in flooded areas across Jamaica yesterday.

Late yesterday, the Meteorological Service upgraded the severe weather alert to a flash flood warning that was expected to remain in effect until 5:00 a.m. today.

VEHICLES WASHED AWAY

In reporting on the effects of yesterday's flooding, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) advised that some three motor vehicles were washed away in the vicinity of the Bog Walk gorge stranding 19 persons, including a sixteen-month-old child. All the persons were successfully hoisted on to a Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) helicopter from the top of a trailer where they had moved to escape the flood waters.

According to Marcelene Edwards of Mandeville, Manchester, one of the persons rescued by the JDF Airwing, "I was travelling this morning when upon reaching a section of the road, I saw a car broke down before me; the next thing I know a strong gush of water overflowed the banks of the Rio Cobre and swept the vehicle unto the side of the road."

MIRACULOUS ESCAPE

A visibly shaken Mrs. Edward said she hurried from the vehicle along with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson who were from England. The Gleaner observed several of the persons rescued hugging love ones, declaring that it is a miracle.

Jamaica has been on the receiving end of a lot of charities, and even if we only have a little, we can assist others. We can't always be the takers. These people are our fellow human beings and to get into an argument about who is worse off, is just plain ridiculous. Even donating as little as $10 to the Red Cross is better than just sitting here and doing nothing. Today it's their tsunami, tomorrow it will be our hurricane! People, have a heart.
