I've read your story and it's been moving but sadly, I cannot share in your pain because I did not migrate until I was a young adult and by then, my self-esteem had been solidly built by Jamaican standards among Jamaican people in an absolutely backhandedly-nurturing Jamaican society.

There are choices one has to make in moving away from one's base but in making these choices one has to find a way of making up for the obvious that is going to be lost rather than making them
the bottome line of "hard-luck" stories.

The grass had looked greener, I am sure, and you may even have felt "better than" those left behind who, in turn, had to struggle with the fact that you (or your ancestors) were gone ahead to a "better life".

Now that we are all grown and realize the error of our thinking, let us allow bygones to be bygones and instead, let's focus on ways in which we can help the present generation develop a healthy respect for their country, its culture and themselves, without resorting to rasta belts, dreadlocks and the "national" colours of red, green and yellow.

Send your children to summer school in Jamaica, allow them to visit as often as is possible, encourage them to take their foreign friends home with them. Let them see the Jamaica that you are proud of: the Jamaica with its variety of music from dancehall to concert, drama of the highest quality, art at its finest, education at its best,
sports unparalleled, and cuisine extraordinaire,etcetera, etcetera.

Or, alternatively, stay where you are and bloom. After all, you are a persevering, entrepreneurial, smart, combative, facety, proud Jamaican. Bloom. No whining.

actually, it is kindof weird that you mentioned race in the jamaican political context. where Manley was widly accepted as poor people prime minister and 'one of us', Seaga was not even though he was not a caucasion.
This 'black man time now' talk was used by Manley's former right hand man and successor, Patterson, in order to control the minds of the undereducated voting populace.

Which of the Manleys was white? None of them as far as *I* can remember, maybe Edna.

..going back, I remember Norman when he used to come to West Kingston to hold street corner meetings. Used to attend with my father when I was a very small girl a West Kgn, and I can see Norman right now, a man almost as black as my Dad.

There was a documentary on him on CIN last night and he did look black as I remember him. 'ere's a pickcha of him and a likkle excerpt bout 'im.

Edna was not White. She was Norman Washington Manley's first cousin. They both had the same grandparents on one side of the family and one of the grandparents was Black. I don't recall which one. Grandma Shearer was quite prejudiced and not at all happy with Bustamante's mother....a Black woman.

On Saturday, May 28, 1938, Bustamante and Grant appeared before the courts and were set free as the judge was afraid of incurring the material and human costs of continued rioting. Upon his release Bustamante thanked his cousin Norman for his assistance and introduced the idea of a trade union (something Manley himself had also spoken of) as a way of organizing and strengthening advocacy for the workers cause.

* Bustamante was also related to Edna Manley by virtue of his maternal grandmother, Elsie Hunter.

For the record, Jamaica's prime ministers have been:

Alexander Bustamante, brown (Afro-Irish)
Norman Manley, brown (Afro-English)
Michael Manley, brown (Afro-English on both sides)
Hugh Shearer, brown (Afro-Irish)

Right down to the present day, the Irish are still making their mark upon Jamaica. Sir Alexander Bustamante, for example, was a national hero, founder of the Jamaica Labour Party, the nation's first prime minister, and one of Jamaica's best loved and most colorful political figures. He used to boast that he was fifty percent Irish, fifty percent Jamaican and ten percent Arawak. If that's not Irish, I don't know what is!

The father of Norman Washington Manley married the postmistress at Porus in Manchester. She was the daughter of a man named Shearer, who was the son of an immigrant from Northern Ireland. Her mother was previously married to Clarke, for whom Alexander Clarke, or Bustamante, was the eldest son. Bustamante and Norman Manley were cousins and went on to found Jamaica's two great political parties. If ever a man could have been said to have kissed the Blarney Stone and have "the gift of the gab," it was the Right Honorable Michael Manley, twice Prime Minister of Jamaica and president of the People’s National Party.
