No more IMF debt
Eight years after Jamaica ended its borrowing relationship with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) the government has totally repaid its debt to that organization.
Finance Minister Dr. Omar Davies made this disclosure at Wednesday's meeting of the Standing Finance Committee in response to queries from Opposition Members.
As members of Parliament soaked in this bit of information, Leader of Government Business, Dr. Peter Phillips, declared that this achievement should be celebrated.
The ending of borrowing arrangements with the IMF was one of the first promises made by Prime Minister PJ Patterson after he assumed office in 1992.
He also pledged that the debt would be repaid before he demitted office.

Re: jamaica has paid off it's IMF loans
much of jamaica's current debt is held by jamaicans...
in the 90's the govt went through a big program of "repatriating" the debt...in the past few years they have been going through a program of replacing the domestic debt with overseas loans.
maybe dem positioning to pull a Argentian wey dem default onthe debt and if is private bond holders holding it dem salt. When its hot in the jungle of peace I go swimming in the ocean of love.....

This is not really good news because Jamaica still owes 140+% of its GDP to creditors, most of it high interests debts that could have been cheaper if we had a structured borrowing program administered by the IMF.
Now I don't support the IMF or borrowing to spend, but if we are going to do it and ask the Jamaican Taxpayers to pay the loans at least do it as cheap as possible.

Re: jamaica has paid off it's IMF loans
This is good news then! So now all those Jamaican farmers with Canada's Foreign Worker Program can go back to Jamaica and get treated with some respect and dignity. Since Jamaica no longer owes the IMF....Canada's Foreign Worker Program is modern day slavery. They target this program to countries that owe the IMF and use it as a vehicle to pay back the IMF in the form of modern day slavery. An exchange of human bodies :verymad:
