during my first year of teaching i was nervous about getting lice from some students who continually had infestations. they'd end up missing a week of school at a time because their mothers would wait a while before treating them...only to be reinfected a week later. the school nurse combed the bugs out of my student's hair and taped them to a piece of paper so that i can see it. they are light brown and very very small, like a flea. you usually don't see the bugs in the hair but the eggs instead. it's also very small, transparent in color and attached very firmly to one strand of hair. if you try to pull if off it won't budge. it's very easy to see on a dark-haired child.

you can buy a lice kit from the store to kill the lice but i also hear that you can use natural ingredients. the special shampoo can be kinda expensive and has pesticides in it that's hard on the hair. a mother told me that you can slather the hair in cooking oil (to suffocate the lice) and put a plastic hair cap on for something like 12-24 hours (i don't remember the exact time frame). the most important thing to do is clean clean clean! not only do you have to wash clothing and linens, but you also have to clean (vacuum) all the furniture as well. everything has to be sterilized. a few years ago one egg (no bugs though) was found on my foster daughter's head and i was up all night cleaning everything. she was a biracial child and i used jam and oils in her hair. she still got it from one of the girls at daycare.

This is another thing that I never knew personally of anyone having (my cousin had ringworm though - whatever di heck that is).

In the US I have seen a product called Rid-X or sinting like that with a comb and medicine fi kids' scalp.

Question - How do most people figure out they have lice anyway?

I'm a Barber so I've seen it a few times.
Never on Blacks always small children.
When we find em in the shop it will close
you right down. Theirs a sterilazation process
to conduct. Barbazide and kerosine used for this.

They itch like mad. just seeing them makes me itch
just takin bout em is enuff!

Worms... Yep lots a people got em and dont know it, imagin that.
only heard of worming the dogs though.

hairdressers won't touch anyone with lice, the risk of it spreading is too much. If you don't want to deal with poisons, douse the head with olive oil and wrap up with cling film or a shower cap and leave it on overnight or as long as possible. This drowns the lice. wash and then comb with a fine comb. Repeat every 3 days for about 10 days to break the life cycle.

Another way to check for lice is to douse the hair in cheap conditioner. Comb thru with a lice comb (Very fine tooth). Wipe it on a tissue and you will see the lice there. I check my kids weekly like this as it's epidemic in australian schools. My daughter has locks though so I just grease up her hair well and most mornings give it a light spray with water and tea tree oil. I check her hair every week when i wash and twist it anyway.

hope that helps. The lice can't live away from the human body long. so while it's a good idea to wash hats and pillowcases you don't need to boil everything.

oh, about lice on body hair? the infestation would be have to be pretty bad and I think you would notice child scratching way before it reached arms and legs. Lice that live in pubic and underarm hair are crabs and slightly different treatment for them.

It is not that black people don't get it.
It is that head lice does not survive in hair that stays close to the scalp.It need to be away from the scalp to survive.so blacks with hair that is not in a tight curls can be infested.

I've never had any of these things either but when you work with kids they pick up all sorts of things you can imagine.
