at the time i was (and still am) a hippy
going to the prom was not the "done" thing for hippies - hey i worn the same pair of jeans the entire 4 years of high school - people were starving in Africa and the VietNam war was raging - i was too conscious to spend money on a prom dress [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img]

being honest, if they had one, I wouldnt know..
I leff jamaica to come to America, about the next weekend after the last day of high school..
so I didnt get to go to the actual graduation service in October of that year or the ball.....

I will always remember my prom best night of my life. My date was a past student from my high school and when we walked into the ballroom everybody was hating on me and my date did not know why they were hating until after the prom was over my date told me that plenty of the girls had asked him previous to go to the prom and he turned them down so to see him with me was a shock to them.
He was 100% gentleman he had a girlfriend and she knew that were were friends she did not act any way towards me and that i greatly appreciated. Still remember his name but have not seen him in quite a while.
To all those who missed out on there prom so sorry to hear that its a memory that cannot be replaced.

No High School boy in my town EVER asked me out ... ever -

Jr. Year - I wanted to go, so I invited my GF's one grade younger brother (we were just friends). He was a jock on the sports team ... the guy's found out he was going with me - gave him such a hard time about going with me ... the entire evening FIZZLED out ..... was THE most miserable evening of my life to date back in 1976.

Talk about feeling rejected!!

Sr. Year .... went out with a farm boy from another far off town the entire school year. I asked him to take me to my Sr. Prom ... he said he could not cuz he was not going to his own and would not be able to ask me in return. Turns out - he went back to his old girlfriend and was taking her ....

Talk about feeling rejected!!! Well - his friend felt sorry for me and told me he did not have a date for prom at his school - so would I go with him?? I went and had a really sexxy dress ... word definately got back to Mark how good I looked.

I remember going to see Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 'A Star is Born' the night of my HS Sr. Prom ... thumbing my nose on my HS.

NEVER went back to any reunion ..... now - if there was a reunion ... I would probably go in a heartbeat .... and brag about the life I am living with my dreams coming true!

Don't know your age Abuxxp, but when I was in high school, girls DID NOT ask the guys to dances or proms. Just the thought of garnering the courage to ASK, with the risk of being REJECTED!

For us the rule of thumb was - If a guy wants to go with you he will ask you to the prom.

My luck - I was dating the starting forward on our basketball team all year then broke up with him before the prom because he was insistant that we become sexual and I was insistant that I wasn't ready. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I went anyway and had a great time with my friends.

It wasn't about self-esteem. That is just how it was in the "olden days". If a girl asked a guy to the prom she was considered desperate. back then, we also did not ask a guy for a date and we certainly did not "Go Dutch" or pay for both of us.

Times were just different then. In my household, my Mom did not work until we were all in school and even when she started working, her check was for housewares and clothes. Daddy paid all bills, paid for groceries, cars, etc.

Even when he died we found out that he had set Mom up financially to be able to live comfortably for the rest of her life.

Daddy was our example to let the man take the lead.
