Irresponsible

“Ok, Ms. Robinson, after listening to your concerns and evaluating your symptoms, it seems that you have multiple personality disorder.” Dr. Schwartz informed as he sat back in his big, leather chair. He removed the glasses from his face and threw them on his desk.

“Multiple Personality Disorder?!” Tashana laughed at the statement. She stopped abruptly when she realized how crazy her laugh made her sound.

“I know to you, Ms. Robinson, it would sound absurd.” The psychiatrist said walking from behind his desk. “I want you to think of your symptoms; you “wake up” in different places, you don’t remember most conversations you’ve had with me or anyone for that matter. You also tell me stories that you deny ever happening or you telling me, and then you’ll bring them up the next session. I’m surprised your relationship is thriving.”

“Well as ironic as it may sound I’ve never blacked out around him.”

“Interesting sounds maybe your other personality or personalities show up during times of stress. So far you have blocked out at work, the gym, and while visiting family. Has your family ever spoken to you about any peculiar behaviors?”

“Not really, only that my mother made a snide remark about me, at Thanksgiving dinner. My brother said I cursed and left the house and didn’t return that night. I woke up at a hotel in the city.” Tashana rose from the long black leather couch that she’d been laying in. She walked over to the window and stared at the people, who favored ants, walking up and down the sidewalk.

“Well here’s a prescription that should help with that. It may not go away completely, but the episodes should be less frequent.” He handed her the prescription, when Tashana grabbed it, the doctor held on to it. Her eyes met his. “Tonight, make sure you fill this tonight.” He said before he released it. Tashana was a known procrastinator.

“Yes Doctor I promise.” She stuffed the prescription into her planner. “Okay same time next week?” Dr. Schwartz nodded and gave a small smile as she exited the office. He sat down and took a deep breathe. Tashana reminded him so much of his own daughter that was her age.

Tashana’s phone rang loud as she entered the street yelling for a taxi. “Hello?” She answered as she climbed in. “Hello!!!” She said annoyed that the person hasn’t answered yet.

“Hey babe, it’s me, what you up to?” It was Mark, her boyfriend.

“Closest train station please.” She instructed the driver. “I’m on my way to home now. I just left therapy.”

“What’s the diagnosis, are you completely a nut or are just crazy.”

“Babe turns out I’m completely a nut, but I’ll explain later.” Mark laughed out loud, Tashana wasn’t laughing.

“Are we still on for dinner tonight?”

“Oh babe I totally forgot. Pick me up in 2 hours.”

“You are always forgetting the important things. I am important right.”

“Of course you are. You’re my life babe, muah! Catch you later I love ya.” She hung up the phone. She paid the cab driver and shot out of the taxi when she heard her train rolling to a stop below ground.

Tashana couldn’t believe she forgot her dinner date with Mark. She looked through her planner on the train to see if she had noted it. The prescription fell into her lap. She picked it up. “I’ll do this in the morning.” She mumbled to herself as she stuffed it back into her planner.

Mark stared at Tashana as she picked through her salad. His heart pounded as he twisted the box over and over in his hand below the table. “Would you rather get good news before dinner or after dinner?”

“Well after dinner is great because I may not be able to eat if I’m over-excited.” Tashana said. She then cocked her head to the side. “What is it?”

“Nothing big, but just not to risk it I’ll ask after dinner.”

“Come on now I’m curious.”

“Ok, fine. Well we’ve been dating for a year and some months now and I realized that a day doesn’t go by where I’m not thinking of you. If I don’t hear from you or see you, I can’t eat or sleep. It’s like I need you to survive.” Tashana began tear up as she listened to Mark go on about their relationship. She almost fell out her chair when he bought the black box from beneath the table and opened it. Inside sat a heart shaped pink diamond engagement ring. She didn’t even give him the chance to ask the question before she was in his lap screaming.

“Yes, yes, yes!!”

Tashana and Mark entered the apartment kissing hard and tugging at each others clothing in the heat of passion. The laid on her bed and as Mark kissed her neck she held up her hand behind him admiring her ring. ‘Wow Mrs. Martindale.” She thought to herself. ‘I’m going to be married. Wait, I’m going to be married?’ she repeated to herself as she just realized the commitment. Tashana began to see darkness crawling upon her. ‘No not now. Not now.’ All went black.

Tashana woke up on the sofa, which she found herself doing every morning lately. She made her way to the kitchen to get a bottle of water. The twinkle of the diamond on her hand caught her attention. She looked at her hand and noticed it was covered in blood. The bottle dropped to the ground and she ran to the bathroom in a panic. There was blood down the front of her chest she was only in her bra and panties. “What did I do? What did I do?” she repeated to herself she ran into the bedroom. There was Mark lying on the floor with a knife sticking out of his chest. His eyes still open. Tashana let out a blood curdling scream as she fell to the floor and doubled up in the corner. “I killed him!” she gasped as she stared at the knife standing directly out of his chest. She got up from the floor and rushed to the living room. “Okay clearing my head, clearing my head. We came in through the door kissing.” She walked herself through as she sobbed. She walked towards the door which was slightly ajar. She pushed it closed as her mind raced. “We went straight to the room; we lay on the bed…”

“Then you killed him.” Someone said with a giggle. Tashana looked around, her heart beating ridiculously fast. No one was in the room.

“Who’s there?” she asked looking around the room.

“It’s always just us dear.” She spun around and standing behind her in the dresser mirror was another girl, she had a wide satisfied grin on her face. Tashana spun around and looked behind her and no one was there. She looked back and the girl was still standing there. “Let me formally introduce myself, I’m your better half, the wild side. The name’s Holly.” Tashana stood frozen she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. “Don’t just stand there, say hello.”

“You’re not real, you’re not real.” Tashana repeated as she covered her ears and ran to the living room. She sat on the couch and looked up at her TV. In the reflection Holly sat on the back of the couch.

“That’s rude! Well you do have a lot on your mind.” She slapped her leg. “Get it?!”

“Leave me alone! You’re not real!”

“Then stop talking to me then, damn! What we gonna do about the body in the room?” She said pulling out a cigarette.

“I don’t know. Well you better figure it out. Cuz I ain’t going to Rikers.” Tashana put her head in her hands as she sobbed. She felt like she lost her mind. She did lose her mind!

“I didn’t do it.”

“Of course not, I did, you don’t have the guts.” Holly said

“Why’d you do that? I loved him!”

“No you didn’t, you was tripping about getting married when I came around he was raping me.”

“It wasn’t rape. We were making love.”

“Not the way he was going at it. Anyway I don’t make love, I F-“

“Shut up, shut up!” Tashana cut her off and threw a vase at the TV.

“Well I ain’t gonna shut up. You need to figure out how to get rid of that body. I ain’t tryna be Martha’s B----!” Tashana jumped up from the couch and ran to the bedroom. She grabbed the sleeping pills from her side table drawer. “Whatcha gonna do wit that. Come on don’t do that.” Holly said following Tashana to the bathroom. “All we gotta do is get the passport and ride. We could go to Jamaica or something.” Holly pleaded.

“I’m not going anywhere with you but hell!” Tashana growled into the mirror. She went into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of vodka and returned back to the bedroom and sat in the pool of blood that collected next to Mark. Sobbing she drank as Holly sat in the mirror pleading with her to throw the pills up.

Tashana and Holly argued back and forth, until finally she looked up at the mirror and Holly was starting to fade. “Damn it Tashana!” She yelled. “Well it was fun while it lasted see you on the other side, deuces!” Tashana curled up next to Mark’s head and cradled him as she fell into her eternal rest.

“What do we have here?” The detective said as he grimaced at the murder-suicide that lay before him.

“Seems that we have a girlfriend that killed her boyfriend and offed herself with pills.”

“Sick, it never gets old; these murder-suicides.” He grunted as he lowered himself to get a better look at the bodies.

“Sir you might wanna take a look at this.” One of the detectives beckoned the lead detective over. “Look at this.” He pointed at the camcorder that sat on the dresser, red light still blinking. “It’s still recording.”

“Wow, this may be easier than we thought.” The lead detective said excitedly. He picked up the camera and put it to rewind as he headed to the dining room. He sat at the table the other detectives standing behind him. He pushed play.

“Come on baby, let’s be different tonight.” Tashana said as she placed the camera on the dresser.

“Mmmm, what did you have in mind?” Mark asked.

“Well, since this is a special night, let’s record it.”

“Record it. I didn’t know you for venturing out like that.” Mark said obviously into the idea.

“Let’s role play. How about I call you Jacques, and you call me Holly. The naive tourists visiting a Paris hotel, and you’re my bell boy.”

"Mmmm I like that." Mark laid back as Tashana crawled on top of him. Just then a guy busted into the bedroom knife in hand.

"Get up! I said get the hell up!!" Tashana scurried to the top of the bed where she pulled a pillow in front of her. "Give me what you got man." He screamed at Mark.

Mark got up with his hands up. "Okay man anything. Just don't hurt us." Mark moved to the side where he grabbed his pants and handed the wallet to the intruder.

"You, give me the ring!!" The intruder yelled at Tashana.
"Hell No!" She said non-chalantly.
"What's wrong with you? Give him the ring!"
"I said no!"
"B----! Do you think i'm playing?" The intruder moved towards Tashana and pulled her arm. She screamed out in pain. Mark came up behind the intruder who then turned and stuck the knife in Mark's chest with one swift motion. He then stepped over Mark's slumped body on the floor and ran out the apartment.

Tashana got up from the bed and tried getting Mark to keep talking to her. She hugged him as he slipped away. She rose and walked as if in a daze to the living room.

The cops then saw her enter and screamed as if it were the first time she saw Mark's body lying on the floor.

With a sigh the lead detective closed the window on the camcorder and dropped it into the evidence bag. "So was there signs of forced entry?"
"No sir. The door was shut when we arrived, but not locked."
"They left the door open...Jesus. In this nieghborhood they were begging for it."
A police officer then entered the room. "Sir, I just spoke with her therapist. Here's his info. Seems she was supposed to be taking some prescription that was suppose to help her with a disorder and her blacking out."
"So that will explain her reaction, and that whole episode she was going through. Why was she still blacking out though? The pills didn't work?"
"Well if she filled the prescription. It probably would have helped."
"What?" The detective looked puzzled.
"We found the order in her purse sir." The detective took the order for prescription from the officer. He shook his head in disappointment.
"It was just one night of being irresponsible...one night."
