Magnitude-7.3 earthquake hits impoverished country of Haiti, hospital collapses

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - A strong earthquake has hit the impoverished country of Haiti, where a hospital has collapsed and people are screaming for help.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3. It occurred Tuesday afternoon and was centred about 14 miles (22 kilometres) west of the Caribbean nation's capital, Port-au-Prince.

An Associated Press videographer saw the collapsed hospital in Petionville.

No further details are immediately available.

Major Earthquake Strikes Haiti
A major earthquake measuring 7.0 on the richter scale has struck off the coast of Haiti. Major damage is being reported although no tsunami warnings have been issued.

Jamaica is on a precarious perch

for those who don't know.
Jamaica is like the peak of a mountain with 2 super deep trench ion the north and the south.
while Cuba, Haiti,Porto Rico and the rest are on the same plate.
Jamaica is on it's own little atoll.

Sections of the Caribbean are now under a Tsunami watch foll

Sections of the Caribbean are now under a Tsunami watch following an earthquake measuring 7.0 off the coast of Haiti.

According to a report on CNN, the earthquake occurred West of the Capital of Port Au Prince.

Tremors that could be associated with that earthquake were felt in the Corporate Area of Kingston and St. Andrew, Jamaica. Reports are also coming in of the quake being felt as far away as St. Mary.

There are tsunami watches for Bahamas, Cuba and Dominican Republic.

According to United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred 15 km (10 miles) South West of PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti 140 km (90 miles) East of Les Cayes, Haiti 145 km (90 miles) West North West of Barahona, Dominican Republic 1140 km (710 miles) South East of Miami, Florida.

CNN reports that a hospital has collapsed in Haiti and many people are trapped and crying out for help.

A tremor was felt in Kingston, Jamaica a short while ago.

It is not clear the magnitude of the quake, but the tremor lasted for more than a minute.

It was felt at The Gleaner headquarters in downtown Kingston and sections of St. Andrew. It is not clear where else around the city or island felt the tremor.

This week is being observed as Earthquake Preparedness Week by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM). A number of activities are planned to educate the public about earthquakes.

There are unconfirmed reports on Twitter that there was an earthquake off the coast of Haiti measuring 7.3. There are also unconfirmed reports that subsequently a Tsunami watch has been instituted for the region.

HAITI (BNO NEWS) — A powerful earthquake struck near Haiti’s capital on Tuesday, prompting a tsunami watch for nearby coasts, officials said. Reports of damage are still sketchy.

The earthquake happened around 4.53 p.m. local time and had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0, according to the United States Geological Survey. It struck about 10 miles southwest of the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

About 10 minutes later, at 5.01 p.m. local time, a second earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck about 30 miles away from the first tremor. A spokeswoman for the United States Geological Survey said a second aftershock struck minutes later, at 5.12 p.m. local time, and had a preliminary magnitude of 5.5.

There was no destructive widespread tsunami threat following the earthquakes, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, who put the magnitude of the earthquake at a much greater 7.3. However, it said, there is a possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than 100 kilometers from the earthquake epicenter.

“Authorities for the region near the epicenter should be aware of this possibility,” the center said in a bulletin. “Areas further from the epicenter could experience small sea level changes and strong or unusual coastal currents.”

Because a tsunami threat exists to coasts within 100 kilometers from the epicenter, tsunami watches have been issued for Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic.

Details of possible damage were still sketchy following the event. “There is a very good chance of significant damage,” the United States Geological Survey said. One report said a hospital on Haiti had collapsed, trapping people underneath the rubble.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake is described as “major” and can cause serious damage over larger areas.

On Jamaica, small tremors were felt, said a person who picked up the phone at the Hilton Kingston Hotel. “I’m not aware of any damage,” Gregory said.

Tsunami Fears After Haiti Earthquake
A major earthquake has struck the Caribbean island of Haiti - placing the region on tsunami watch.

Substantial damages and casualties are expected following the quake, which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, and two powerful aftershocks which followed.

The country's ambassador to the United States described it a &quot;catastrophe of major proportions&quot;.

A hospital and a three-storey building in Petionville have reportedly collapsed.

A reporter for the AFP agency said a tractor was already at the scene trying to dig out victims as people fled onto the streets of the impoverished country in panic.

No details on causualties were immediately available.

The epicentre of the quake, which was initially reported off the coast, was located inland, only 10 miles from the capital Port-au-Prince.

It was followed by two powerful aftershocks, measuring 5.9 and 5.5 on Richter scale.

The tsunami watch is in effect for Haiti, the neighbouring Dominican Republic, with which it shares the island of Hispaniola, Cuba and the Bahamas.

A US government official in Haiti reported seeing houses that had tumbled into a ravine.

&quot;Everybody is just totally, totally freaked out and shaken,&quot; said Henry Bahn, a visiting official with the US Department of Agriculture.

Mr Bahn said there were rocks strewn all over the place and he saw a ravine where several homes had been built.

I think it is safe to assume that there wiil be some chance of a few larger than average waves.

The depth of the oceans around Jamaica Make it less likely and also the position of the quake. Jamaica Is surrounded by very deep water between Jamaica, cayman Hispaniola, and the rest of the islands.
It does not have lone shallows like morants hallowes close by. So the Morant shallows are likely to break the tidal waves and the resultant effects will not be as devastating.

It will also be coming from the north shore too.
Mona channel is the savior.

as for Haiti on tsunami watch, they are late.

if the center is only 14 miles offshore, how long do they think it take for it to reach land??
